Stickys?

Minor Forum Related Question:

Is it possible for this forum to have "stickies" , by which i mean topcis that remain at the top of the list and are highlighted in some way?

Cause im sorry, SO many of these retarded posts could be fixed with a few general posts: Nile, Sav, Water, Timor, Ackie, Argus, etc care guides, general monitor husbandry info, etc.

The simple fact is, people are lazy and they just wont bother looking at the other websites or going through the archives. The only creatures suffering from this are the animals- the humans arent really affected.

Id be personally willing to accumulate information from the archives and produce these posts (after they are looked over by FR or someone who actualy knows the stuff from experience), if only because i think it would save monitor lives... and honestly, thats all i really care about.

For me, time is of no importance, only the lives of these animals is important, and Id like to do whatever I can to help newcomers and lazy folk alike... or, more honestly, to help their animals.

Hello Nilekeeper,
I think your heart is in the right place, but still a far cry from reality... Many of these animals are doomed to die a hindered metabolic death from the time they reach here. I am all for any methods benefitting the animals, unfortunately, I believe that the only solution would be to get each and every one of these little monitors into the care of keepers capable of copying. It is just that simple. Heck, my lizards are doing great! I dared to read every FR post, Robyn, Jobi, ShVar, jborukas, RobFaust and others(sorry if I didn't mention you because I did read you...)! Read these guys, it's been way more helpful than any of the tons of taxonomy that has been packed into all forms of thinking books. Read it and copy it in practice. The people who are posting the foolish stuff, they will buy'em, because they can- but these lizards were dead in the pet store- their nerves just haven't caught up... I wish they all made it to capable keepers but alot of times, animals have to die before bad keepers can realize that they weren't keepers at all... and then you get those who have vets that excuse them by blaming the poor monitors liver, and it goes on and on... There is an old movie saying- Forest Gump- "Stupid is as stupid does" and I hate quoting this because of the association, but heck if I am slow and have to read things 10 times to make sure that I get them, then in the end, my breeding experience will be that much richer. Boy I cannot wait to see pipping- I think I can accept death after that day (boy, Mary's gonna kick me!). You have to really want it enough to actually practice to get to it... Anyways, I have only cracked a cube off of the iceberg. I've seen alot in my days, but some here have seen alot more, to the point that they don't even comment on stuff like this anymore. Numb. Best to you- Mike

I know what you mean, and I can understand how they feel that way (God, in the short time ive watched these boards, how many times have people asked the same questions about Niles and being tame).

But still, I cant just sit back and watch it all go by.

Thats how things DONT get changed.

Alotta these people, they post these stupid questions for one simple reason: they're too bloody lazy to rumage into the archive to look for their answer.

Im just thinking that, if you (or, more correctly, I) offer them the chance to get the information lazily.... well, maybe itll help some of these poor, doomed little animals.

Granted, itd be a small, worthless lil portion compared to the whole of their suffering, but at LEAST a few might get the help they need.

You cant just continually say "Oh, well that person was a poor keeper, that animal is doomed." if you do that, how does the poor keeper ever become the good keeper?

Thats like saying "Oh, well, that dog is destined to die because its food bowl is empty" without ever thinking "Why dont I fill the bowl?"

Theres alotta people out there that will change their ways if they are shown... granted, there are more that wont.

Gatherin the information from various sources (such as those folks you mentioned), in other words, reading ALL their posts and compiling the information, i think would help some people... mainly the lazy, who are prolly pre-destined to fail, but still...

I guess I just want to find a way to get involved... I cant just sit back and watch animals suffer, i refuse to do it.

I guess it comes do to me wanting to appease myself by saying "At least I tried."... ya know?

The more I read through this stuff the more I Understand why only a few experienced keepers offer up any real advice here. Common sense questions and arguments from a base of zero experience. Zero experience repeating hearsay to deaf ears.

Here's what I think, not that it matters but everyone loves to put in their two cents.
Question: What is the best beginner monitor?
Answer: No monitors are for beginners or all monitors are for beginners. The answer depends on where the asker coming from.
If one is genuinely interested in monitors and plans on purchasing one or already has one but has no understanding of them, they may not even come here and ask any questions at all. They might just come here and start reading through these threads and find what they need that way. They will copy what they read and like do allright. Problems arise and they can't solve them on their own, then they ask questions. These kind will do whatever they have to do for the animal and it does'nt matter what kind of monitor they get.
The other kind runs on impulse. They come here asking stupid questions or asking and not hearing what they were told at the petstore, so the argue and become offended. Their monitors will suffer, die, or be pawned off because it's a novelty to them. Ackies, Niles, or friggin Crocks, what's the difference. All have special needs and require a certain amount of dedication.
It does'nt take long to figure out that they are not something one can simply set up and be good to go.
Nile Keeper, your passion is admirable but misplaced. Pounding your fingers wont make a difference. Repeating what youve been told by others wont make a difference. Sharing your actual experience will make a difference. Your experience will recieve feedback from those with real experience. Others will read these experiences and learn from them along with you.
The people who make a real difference are actively learning to and breeding these animals. Also they are not making the fruits of their labor available to any shmo who wants to buy a monitor.
They are sharing their experiences amongst one another and pushing monitor husbandry toward forward advancement.
