Baby pine snakes...

redoaksblues Apr 08, 2007 09:07 PM

We live in North Florida and have baby pine snakes everywhere! How difficult is it to raise one (have tank..undertank heaters..(used to raise geckos).........they are very docile (suprizingly...)...mom is a big brute, over 4 feet long, but also very docile (hangs out in the feed shed, lets us move her when she gets in the way...etc)...Thank you in advance!!!!!!!

Where exactly do you live,LOL? Are you sure they're pinesnakes and not ratsnakes? Kevin

Jennings Florida...positive they are pine snakes. I have been observing them for the longest time. They have such a distinctive pattern on their backs....

Do you have any pics??
We'd love to see 'em.
Remember they are protected in that you may only have one.
Many wc pines do not do well in captivity.

It would be a great find to see more than one FL pine at a time and especially babies or youngsters. Please photo them!
Normally FL pines are not really "calm"

We are moving north...and we are hoping for a "snake friendly" homeowner....if one is not found...is there a place to place our big girl? My husband said she is closer to five feet (he measured her shed the other day)......I would hate to leave her behind in a "the only good snake is a dead snake" mentaility....are there rescue groups for relocation of this sort in case?

probably is more like 4 feet then because the skin tends to stretch after they shed. I wish I lived in florida and was in the market for a house as I would look into it more, sounds liek a great area. really would like to see pics of the babies, hadn't heard of pits playing dead before.

I dont know if it is playing dead...but the get all kinky looking and mottled loooking as if they are rotting. They do not go upside down....they just take on the appearance of ...for want of a better word...."decay"....

Sure sound more like gray rats than pines. I do know of some spots in your area though that hold pinesnakes.
Pictures??(snakes)
Your place is beautiful. Why leave??

I will take some tomorrow....I was starting to worry...as I have only seen our two big ones around for the last 2 years, a few coach whips, and of course the evil black racer (one nasty snake- will chase you down-picture below) and no babies..but this year......they are in the flower beds.....in the yard...........I never knew snakes had "personality"....when you approach most of the babies...they play "dead rotted snake" which is so funny.....but there is one.....he is a Joe Pesci Tough Guy...he comes right at you, wraps around your shoe (no biting though..after the first heart attack of an attacking pine snake...it was acutally cute)....and takes off...

will try to get pics tomorrow. Mom is the impressive one, she is HUGE
