I lived very close to there in Sharon Hill until a couple
years ago. The few times I walked through there I saw a ton
of garter snakes and some really nice snapper turtles. There
is a place you can park right on Rt. 420.

well ive been down there fishign plenty of times and been down there scoping the scene out this past winter and ive heard talk about black rats being down there.

ifound plenty of good spots , alota car hoods and metal with rodent nests underneath as well ass rocky outcrops in brushy fields as well as just plain old woods with lots of rotted loggs and fallen shelter, and thepopulation of birds would be awesome for them too i would assume.
i will look to further prove there existence in thispark/refuge but im loking for anyone elses experience in this area to help me find out were they might be ,i know thers box turtles here wich makes sense cuz i know spots near the delaware border right down 1 95 for them and thats were i start catchign black rats too .i know thers been a black racer found in cobbs creek parkway a few yeasr back wich leads into the tinicum area.coincadence? this has me going
any more info would be appreciated.i even looked on there website and they only have water snakes , garters and dekays listed as the snakes found there .

i really doubt there are any black rats in there. they seem to have disappeared many years ago from suburban philadelphia. you gotta go to delaware or jersey to see those nowadays. black racers are still around though. there used to be a nice population of coluber constrictor in memorial park in springfield but now that area has been bulldozed for housing. we used to see them there all the time back in the 70's.......

hmm well do u know were reed road and sproul road are? theres a huge set ofwoods behind cardinal ohara and don guanila thats private property, its right around the corner from memorial park . but its been woods there foreever , one of the only few sets of "untouched woods " around , i was a lil drunk walking home from wendys one night near there and i found adead baby black rat snake in the parking lot. that got me going and got me veru curious,
also around the corner behind st peter and paul cemetary on sproul rd thers crum creeks and thecrum creek resorvoir along with a few ponsd and marshland on the side of the creek , i found a adult painter turtle shell with about 7 snakeeggs in it , looked to be black rat or black racer eggs, definately wasnt turtle eggs, whatever the turtle was died awile ago and soemthing seemed to find that shell and layed bout 6 or 7 eggs and filled up the whoelinside of the shell perfectly, theywere all hatched with egg tooth slits in it , definately snake eggs.
these were both about 5 years ago , ive kinda been out of thereptile trade thewhole hobby itsself so i havnt realy been out inawhile but this year im gonna see whats up with them spots as well.and see what i can prove .
i used to drink behind drexellline shopping center near memorial park , is this were yous used to catch black racers ?
are you saying theres still racers around near us ?
if youd ever like to go on some trips let meknow ,im alwayslooking for locals

yeah, i went to cardinal o'hara & grew up directly behind drexeline shopping center on the spfd. side of darby creek. i knew every inch of those woods back then, spent my entire youth in there flipping rocks, etc. we never saw black rats though, ever. the dor baby you found was probably a racer, they look nearly identical at that age. the section of memorial park that had alot of racers is directly across from rolling green gc on rt. 1 but like i said, it's been bulldozed. here's a pic of a nice texas rat someone sent me a couple years ago as a hatchling....

well i have a program of Google Earth, pretty much a stil satelite picture that lets you zoom into your own car in your driveway if u wanted but its from about 6 years ago i belive, and by the looks of it theres still a nice area of woods across from roling green golf course but if there was i would belive them racers probly woulda been wiped out by now or you woulda atleast heard of one or saw one enar the creek at drexelline .
but im almost positive that it was a blacky black rat DOR near reed road. i had 2 litters that summer of baby BR's and theres was no doubt in my mind of what it was, i was almost certain itwas a baby BR.who knows .
and was memorial park bulldozed into them aparments? or into all the houses in that area?

no, those apts have been there for decades. they are building brand new homes now exactly where we used to see the racers. there was also a ton of garters & dekays up there as well as box turtles.

closedcasket88 Apr 16, 2007 10:39 AM

yeah youl stil see some garters and dekayis round there prob no box turtles anymore ,who knows , i foundone in nailors run park a year or two ago, its eyes were both scabbed up and healed together , it was f in crazy , i was gonna take it but i just let it be.
i hear theres box turtles near crum creek resorvoir along crum creek , thers a huge stretch of woods and ponds and marsh along the creek under 476 alogn crum creek road. thats were i found a painter shell with racers eggs in it .
you you go up towards sproul lanes and go down old marple road it will bring you to right there
thats on my list to hit up this spring
