Egg Laying PICS

PATMAN Apr 09, 2007 11:10 AM

I was lucky to get this picture last week of my female eastern box turtle "Chip" laying 5 eggs at 3 AM in the morning!

I've had "Chip" for over 15 years now and she has never laid fertile eggs (just like my 22 year old 3 toed Clyde, until this year). That's because I never had a mate for her until 2 years ago. She always would lay eggs on the surface never digging a nest.

This was the first time she has ever dug a nest and laid eggs in it for me! I am also happy to say, all 5 eggs have turned a nice white color, a very good sign they are fertile!

They are in the incubator along with 4 other eggs laid yesterday by another female eastern I have (the one with the healed cracked shell). Looks like there will be a lot of eggs hatching at the same time for me in a couple months!

Here's the OUCH shot!

Here's a better picture of Chip. What do you think of her eye color?!

I was just looking in here for a place to ask about this very subject, maybe you can help me out here.We have a little turtle that looks a lot like the one you have pictured, that my kids caught in the everglades. We have had her for about 3 months in an outdoor enclosure that we made,Just a few days on our way out to feed her,we saw that she had dug a hole and was laying eggs in it.We found 2 of the eggs, should we expect her to lay more or is that all they lay at once? She is about the same size as the one your pic.We put the eggs, with the top marked so they wouldn't move, in an incubator that we made according to a turtle book we have, but they both shriveled up like raisins.Did we do something wrong or does this mean she isn't well?If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate any help, and soory for the highjack, nice pics BTW!

What medium did you have the eggs in?

I place my eggs half way into moist vermiculite. The key is they must be in a moist medium and the humdity must remain HIGH inside the incubator, otherwise they will shrivel up. You can also put the eggs in moist spagnum moss.

There a very good chance she will lay eggs again for you.

Congrats on the eggs...and Chip is a really beautiful girl. I'm expecting eggs from two of my Florida's any day now. I'll try to get a few pics of them laying.
