Shedding question...w/ pictures

railrider1920 Apr 09, 2007 05:30 PM

Hello everyone,
I don't post here very often, but when I do, I get some great advise. Thanks everyone.
Have another question. My BRB just shed on Sat. It was a full and complete shed. She was in the blue for what seems like 2 to 3 weeks. Almost the whole time, she stayed on the cool side of the tank--69 to 71 deg with the warm side 79 to 82 deg. Humidity up between 60% to 85% or so. I'd move her to the warm side and she would just go back to the cool side and snuggle up between the waterbowl and the glass. I don't remember her doing this the last times she shed. And I don't remember it taking this long for her to shed. What is the average time for shedding? Does this sound normal, staying on the cool side like that? Now that she has shed, she is on the warmer side of the tank.
Thanks for your thoughts. Here are a few pictures for you to look at. Not sure what I did to get them to be so large. Sorry about that.

Very pretty snake Rob. 2-3 weeks is a long time to be blue. Doesn't sound like anything is wrong though. Could be that her metabolism slowed down when she was on the cooler end of the cage. This could prolong the shed cycle. The reality is, that's why we give them a temperature gradient. She looks great now though.

the given gradient gives the snake a choice of where it wants to go, warmer or colder their choice, it could make the ecdysis (shed) process take longer, but if the snake wanted to thermoregulate and get warmer, then it simply moves to a warmer area of the enclosure, they know what they want better then us and choose accordingly if such a choice is available to them. If not provided we have to guess what we think is best for their optimal treatment, like I said they know better than us, although we all like to believe we are so knowledgeable lol, I believe this is what mike meant without saying, about that reality,

>>the given gradient gives the snake a choice of where it wants to go, warmer or colder their choice,

I know about that. (I'm not trying to sound like a know it all smart ... you know what, I promise) I just thought that it was odd that she spent soo much time on the colder side. I was beginning to worry. She got a good meal today and went and was hanging out on the warmer side since I put her back in the tank.

Guys, thanks for your input on my question.
Rob

wouldn't have thought you to be a wisebutt lol, the snake chose the coolside for a reason, it would be nice if they would tell us exactly why lol
