Go to your nearst hardware store like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, whatever.........and buy the foger spray by "Black Flag" that kills mosquitos/ flies/ gnats.
The main ingredient in Provent-A-Mite that kills mites is Permethrin at .50%
Black Flag mosquito fogger has the same thing. Permethrin (and tetramethrin), both ingredients are at .2% instead of .5% but it still works like a charm. I had a bad break out last year and the Black Flag cleared it up fast. Plus you get a bigger can and it only costs you 4$ instead of $20.
You dont have to move the animals out of the room pursay, but you want to take the snakes and water dish out of the cage youre going to treat. I havent had any problems with it and it kills the mites super fast.
Good luck man.
Brendan
Not even on a bet .

Care to expound? Why would anyone rather pay $20 a can for something you can by for $4 a can with a different name.
Except for the people that have money to burn I find it rather useful to do some homework and benefit from a worthy product that saves money and does the job efficiently.
Just my 2cents.
Cheers
I jus hate to see my snakes unhealthy. Their not just my collection. They're my pets. they're part of the family.
I don't mean to offend you, and no, I don't have money to burn. I only stated that I can't speak on behalf of Black Flag. I can only talk about what worked for me and my collection. I'm glad that you posted about it. I will look for others doing the same treatment and hope that they have good results as well. Take care, David

I wasnt offended at all. Im glad you werent either. Im all about shareing info if its been tested and worked. Im not concerned if anyone actualy takes my advice. I just wanted you to know that there are alternatives that are productive and can save money without creating more hassle and whatnot.
Good luck with your collection man. Mites are definately annoying but "permethrin" will certainly kick em out.
Brendan
I'd rather pay $20. for the peace of mind, because it isn't the same. The only part that's the same is that .5%. That other 99.5% is not tested on snakes, those ingredients aren't listed on the can, and formulas change from time to time so even if your friend used it with no negative results it still might harm your snakes. These products are bedding sprays usually, and honestly a bedding spray made for horses or dogs isn't the same, it could contain aromatics like cedar and eucalyptus or any other ingredients harmful to snakes. It could have a delayed harmful effect like giving your snakes cancer, or other diseases later on, enough later for that effect to not be being associated with the spray yet since it isn't being used in any controlled way.
Also it's not OK to spray it in the room where snakes or humans may breathe it. It is only non-toxic in it's dried form. OK maybe that was my .03 cents.

Hi Caden.
I appreciate your thoughts. Im not trying to imply that my suggestion is altogether better. You have some valid points. The tetramethrin that is also in the can of Black Flag probably hasnt been tested with snakes. Who knows what the repurcussions could be. My willing to risk it is simply my personal choice. It may or may not benefit the rest of you in the herp community in the future. I realize its important to consider risks but sometimes being optimistic has its payoff too. You might as well give it the benifit of the doubt. Its not like the suggestion is being forced on anyone.
Concerning spraying while animals are in the room.....I certainly am not suggesting to leave an animal in the cage while spraying. First of all its important to make sure the room youre treating is well ventalated to clear the vapors out as quickly as possible. Its vital to move each animal to a different cage other than the one being treated but if the room is well ventilated it may not be necessary to extract all animals from the room itself. (my .02cents)
Of course, any chemical you use that has permethrim is likely going to have harmful effects on any insects in the room. Like, if you have tarantulas or scorpians etc the vapors may kill them.
Brendan
I don't know about the Black flag, but about 2 years ago I bought provent-a-mite because my wife took a new delivery straight to the snake room instead of the quarantine room. It came in a package with reptile relief - from LLLreptilesupply the reptile relief can be put directly on the Boa. I would feed my Boa in a separate tub. While its eating, spray the cage with povent-a-mite. When its done eating spray the snake with reptile relief as your putting it back in its cage. Other places to buy from are the bean farm, and maybe Big apple or pro-exotics.
