Adult BRB tank size

railrider1920 Apr 09, 2007 10:38 PM

Hi Folks,
Right now my BRB is about a year old /- and about 26 (?) inches long. I'm trying to plan for the future. Right now I have her in a 20 gal long glass tank. I'll probably leave her in this for a while longer, maybe another year?

I'm thinking about building a new enclosure for her that would be for adult size. What size tank/enclosure would you suggest for an adult? I'm thinking something along the size of 4ft long, 2ft wide and maybe 15 inches high since she doesn't really go up at all. How does this sound?
Thanks,
Rob

That size of a tank is plenty for an adult, even the biggest examples will be fine in that much room. Many people on here keep their adults in much smaller tanks.

I personally keep my adults in the IRIS VE175 tubes (50"x18"x18" I think.. ) and it is more than enough.

Plenty large enough, BFRB's can easily follow the 1 square foot of floor per foot of snake guideline. Actually they can easily be kept in smaller areas. My main cages are 2' x 2' x 18" . Yes that is a little small but they do get two levels in that space and several options for where to hang out. Each cage section has paper substrate, a Sterilite 1754 damp moss hide box with a 2 gallon squat water bowl. So they can lay dry and cool on one side, dry and warm on the other, moist and medium or up top in the hot tub.

These pics are old and don't have moss in the hides but you get the idea.

Oh yeah, I switched all 16 cage sections over to Radient Heat Panels. They work GREAT!!!

I'd go with a taller enclosure with lots of climbing opportunities. For a big adult 5Lx2Dx3H would be great (you could probably squeeze in two adults, double your fun). Of course you could go smaller but unless housing a large collection and space is an issue, why?
Beautiful, interesting snakes, why not display them? Though your youngster may not come out much now, it will be more active as an adult and BRB's are climbers. I'd also look into the radiant heat panels as suggested by Dave or some other means of achieving a vertical and horizontal heat gradient. In my opinion, ambient temperatures are best for tropical, rainforest snakes (I've been there; dark, warm, humid, coolest place is down in the leaf litter and mud).
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Also don't underestimate how fast they can grow. My pair are only 22 months old now but my female is already in the 5 foot range and 2/3 as thick as my wrist. If it weren't for the male going off feed this year(breeding/hibernating season) he would be also. As it is he is still in the 4 foot range even with the much lighter feeding.

You still got time to figure out what you want etc... but don't expect the growth rate to slow down for at least another year or so (maybe longer, I don't know).

I'm thinking about drawing up some plans tomorrow, see what I come up with. May not need it right now, but I have an urge to build something.
Thanks again,
Rob
