AFRICAN SOFT FUR RATS...

Twest Apr 10, 2007 05:43 AM

I have my Rat rats set-up in a Top feeding rack with 1/2 inch mesh for the to eat the food through... and mice with 1/4 inch mesh...
Is the 1/2 TOO big for the ASF, can they get out of it like mice?
Can someone who has ASF rats tell me what size mesh works well for them?
I need to get them out of the aquriums...

Thanks in Advance,
Twest

Yes, 1/2" is too big for ASF rats.
They grow at about the same rate as mice, and yet are actively running around at a much smaller size than mice do. They can easily get through 1/2" mesh so I would recommend 1/4"

They are also voracious chewers and explosive jumpers.

Mine are in aquariums with 1/2" wire food hoppers inside and lab cages with I think 3/8" or 1/4" mouse safe wire lids. So I cannot vouch for whether or not they can eat through 1/4", but if mice can then I would think that ASF could.

you could try 1/3x1/3 hardware cloth i raise full size rats with 1/2x1/2 but know folks who use 1/3 for theirs because the food doesen't fall though as easy it's pricey but avaliable at www.klubertanz.com

hope that helps gene
