Do IBD signs come and go?

estanfield Apr 10, 2007 02:06 PM

Just got a sort of a rescue 1800g female. After having her in her new vision home for about 2 days she started stargazing and doing a wierd movement with her head and first 5 inches of the body. She was contorting it in strage ways. It also appeared at times that she couldn't really control the bulk of her body. She does this while being held and in her enclosure. However, i've observed her moving normally in her enclosure as well. Today I'm seeing signs of a resperitory infection. The cage is clean (no chemicals around), it had some eco earth coconut bedding the day I first noticed but now that has been removed. Any ideas?

If she does have IBD, being a python, she won't survive with it long.

Keep her away from EVERYTHING, and practice better sterilization techniques than most hospitals.

A vet can do little with a live animal, live liver biopsies are possible but expensive.

With risks to the rest of your collection you may want to consider euthanization if it is a serious concern.

Contact the person you got her from immediately with your concern, this is dire because if they are selling animals to other people and had an infected snake there is a serious danger of exposure to other collections.

Well, the only upside is that she is my only snake right now. I was planning on finding an adult male Albino, and a few het females at the IRBA San Diego in a few weeks and hopefully have at least one breeding next year with the fore mentioned female.

Just be careful because if it is something as infectious and deadly as IBD then you may be risking the lives of any snakes that you purchase in the near future because even though the snake that had the IBD is gone the disease can still live on the surfaces of the environment.
