my new torts

kellygirll Apr 10, 2007 05:43 PM

i just got 2 red footed torts for easter i love them. the pet store didnt know how old they are. the plastron measures less than 4 inches and i read it is illegal to sell them less than that [only for research and education] my problem is i cannot find specific instructions for care forthere age because i do not know it. i am feeding them lettuce raddishes cukes etc. i have them in a small tankbut i am going to get a large one, 75 gallon when i move in 3 weeks. i feed them once a day but have to take them out of there hidding place and put them to the food and water then they eat and drink. but i want to know if this is normal and if any one has any info/suggestions if i am not caring for them properly.

Sounds like from their size (about 3 inches? they are about 9 months to a year old but that can vary. Both my guys were 3 1/2 inches at one year old. Its also normal for them to be shy at first and spend a great deal of time in their hide. Mine would often spend a lot of time in their hide, facing out, so that they looked like 2 cars that were backed into a garage.
