Question about food for new tort...

Jeannie Aug 13, 2003 04:10 PM

I just got Moxie (Hermann's hatchling, 3 mos. old) on Monday. I know he has been eating well because he did a nice firm poop on the way home. He is alert and active, especially when he's outside in his pen--he marches all over and investigates everything. But he doesn't seem to have much of an appetite so far. He's nibbled a little, but that's about it. I'm offering him dandelion, grape leaves, opuntia, watercress, a little romaine, a little spring mix, kale, and some rose and daylilly petals. I've heard that baby Hermann's are little chow hounds. How long should it take him to settle in and start really eating? Is there anything I can tempt him with? And it is better to offer the foods as whole leaves or chop it up (I'm doing both, lol)?

Thanks!

Jeannie

See if you can find out what he was eating before you got him. Maybe he was being fed a pelleted diet and isn't really recognizing what you are feed him is food. Also make sure he's warm enough, if a tortoise is cool, he'll eat less

Just some ideas

Thanks, I'm making sure he's staying warm enough, and getting at least some outside time everyday (it's been pretty hot here). He was eating greens before, but I think they were giving him more romaine, so I'm offering at least a little of that, even though I know it's not the best thing for him. I'll switch him over once his appetite picks up.

It takes a week or so before they really start eating, some more some less. Don't worry about it. I rip my leaves to a smaller size but I wouldn't call it cutting up. They are still fairly large. In the wild they would have to tear it up themselves, and its some okay excersise.

Thanks, I won't worry about it then. I know he's eating at least a little, because he does a little poop every day, and every day he's less shy and more active.

I have Russian torts. They love corn-on-te-cob, bananas, strawberries, and dark green lettuce.
