I typically witness copulation within 10 minutes of a male and female introduction when both are ready to breed. I generally don't leave them together more than 24 hours just incase one gets hungry.

If nothing happens within an hour there is a really good chance the female is not ready. Males in my opinion are generally always ready....much like a male human If you are encountering an unwilling female.....feed her more frequent meals and that will usually do the trick.

I agree with Russ, if nothing happens in 10-15 min, separate them an try again in a day or two. I try to always be around when I'm breeding my snakes and always separate them when their not hooked up. Its kind of hard with Cal kings because they stay hooked for so long, but Thayeri and Az. Kings seem to be short timers.
I have a Thayeri female who in the last two years has tried to eat her mates 4 different times, This year, 1st interduction two day after brumation shed. He's courting her, and she's not rejecting him, I'm cleaning cages,I here a bang and scuffle in their box. I open their box quickly to find his head all the way in her mouth. I was feeding her every five days. Three days later, 2nd try, I fed her between interductions. I put them together, both excepting each other right away, they hook up for about 25 min.,I thought, OK GREAT. I Had been checking on them every few min. Again I hear that sound, Bang and scuffle, I again open the box and find her again, with his head clamped in her mouth. This female I would never leave alone again with her mate.
Here is a picture I took about 15 min. before she tried to eat him again the second time. The darker of th two is the female
Thanks for looking.

I personally leave them in for a few days at a time, but I never swith to another male, I always just use one male for female so that I know who the father is for each clutch. I do this for accurate records. But the down sides is sometimes they don't breed and I have to wait till the following season.

I like keeping the same two together instead of switching males myself. I've got one male servicing 3 females, and the other 2 females have a separate male each so all 5 females just have one mate. I have usually kept them in together for a few days myself, but I would hate for it to take a tragic accident to make me change so I should probably shorten the time a little just to be sure. Better safe.

Thank you. He is my main stud this year servicing three females. I hope to hook him up with this green girl in the next year, or two.
