I don't know what the theory behind it is. However, it doesn't sound as though it would do any harm. So if you subscribe to whatever the theory behind this strategy is, then go ahead and do it.
Personally, I don't see any extra benefit of doing things that way. However, as long as you are not hurting the snake which, in this case, you are not, then feel free to do it which ever way you feel comfortable.
