ESA Animals Permit

gofast Apr 11, 2007 06:22 PM

Does anyone know the rules regarding keeping or purchasing a captive bred ESA animal ,specifically a Galapagos Tortoise, in California? What permits are needed, if any? Where do you get these? Thanks!

The ESA covers interstate transfers not in state (intrastate) transfers. You may acquire any non-native ESA animal within your same state. If you are outside of CA, you need to get a CBW permit if money changes hands. Of course, you may be able to convince someone to "gift" you the animal. In that case interstate transfer is allowed.

Goto www.fws.gov and click on permit section under CBW or ESA.
