What can I do here in Del Rio

rak Apr 11, 2007 06:56 PM

I thought about dropping off fliers to managers at establishments used by herpers. Unfortunatly I do not think the state cares about hotel owners because they seem to be targeting out of state herpers. I am also worried about alerting unfriendly establishments. Any advice or Ideas I can do here to gain us support?

You can just show up at the chamber of commerce.. Schedule yourself a meeting and dress like you are looking for a job and bring any documents you can find.... even emails from your out state friends that are worried about this.

I and my wife are members of the Chamber, and have talked with the office admin there. Unforunatly I got the typical response I get from people. I do not think they relize the draw it brings. Remember this is a town that could not even market one of the best bass fishing lakes in the country. What I need are some hard numbers, how many people on average are here at any given time, moneys spent etc..

Gas $20-30/day
Food $30-40/day
Coffee, candy, snacks $5-10/day
Hotel $40-65/day
X 150 days over the last 10 years = $14,250 to 21,750.

That is a bare minimum. To that you could add all sorts of stuff, batteries, film, Q-Beams, T-Shirts, touristy nick nacks.

If I lived in state I would include stuff like cameras, accessory lights for my vehicle, hooks, tongs, plastic containers, cages and racks to house my catches, etc. In state herpers should add all that stuff plus yearly maintanance, vet bills etc. if you purchased it within the state of TX.

That's easy-when i lived out of state i spent an average of $2000.00 per year on my annual West TX trip.

There are a lot of businesses that very much appreciate herpers and the business we give them in the off season. These folks should be informed and encouraged to take action.

That motels seem to have a don't ask don't tell policy because we end up keeping reptiles in our rooms. Other than that they would be our strongest backer.

know that herpers stay there, and do not mind. That would give a starting point.
