thinking about getting a king

black_wolf Apr 11, 2007 10:47 PM

Right now my snake collection is 2 pythons and a corn snake. I've been thinking about getting a kingsnake but I haven't seen as many color options available as with corns (at least not at shows and local mom-pops shops).
was wondering of any good reputable breeders that has some nice colors (other than black-n-white ban).
And how are their temperaments?
Any first hand experience/advise, and info on these guys would be great.

depends on the type of king you get, and how much you are willing to spend. check the classifieds section of kingsnake.com. the choices are tough. goodluck let us know what you get. I'm partial to florida kingsnakes.

all snakes have different temperments. I've found fl kings to be a lil better than most. but on occasion one of mine get moody. even though they are captive bred they still have wild instincts and sometimes they may let you know. that said I've had cal kings and the ones I had were a lil skittish. but I've handled some that were "tame" too. it all depends on the snake and I believe how it is taken care of. hope this helped

There's many morphs of Florida/Brooks Kings and there's variation even within the morphs. Many many choices and these Kings are more often docile than not. I have at least 20 and will probably hold back many more babies this season. Tom Stevens

The "black and white" ones you refer to sound like Cal Kings which generally have a base color of brown to black and white to yellow bands (or stripe).

There are many subspecies of common kings - and some of them can be quite colorful.

In addition to common kingsnakes, there are many species of kingsnakes that have quite a bit of color - Gray Banded Kingsnakes, Thayeri, Mountain Kings, etc.

But even the cal kings have quite a bit of variation.
Here is a "normal" cal king male with a "lavender" hypomelanistic:

kerby has an excellent collection of Cal Kings showing the variety you can get -

But it sounds like maybe some of the floridana/brooksi kings are what you want.
