kind of ot, largest lizards?

contemplate Aug 13, 2003 07:04 PM

what do you guys think are the largest (as in bulk, not length) available lizards. komodos are obviously the largest lizards but i've never heard of any captive ones outside of zoos. are there any little known tegus or monitors? i know the crocodile monitor is one of the longest lizards, but they're very skinny. thanx

I think water monitors are secound to the komodos, they can get over 100 pounds! I haven't seen any lizards larger then my tegus in person :/

We went to Vegas and at Mandelay Bay's Shark Reef they had an asian water monitor that was HUGE. I can't imagine keeping a lizard like that in my basement. I'm sure some do. It seemed content in it's enclosure. The thing would eat my miniature daschund for a snack and go after my bird dog. One of the ladies that work there told us that they were going to be AZA accredited and would be getting komodos.

I cared for an 8 foot Croc monitor for a couple of months until we could arrange transportation to his new home in Florida. Most large lizards don't intimidate me..I have a healthy respect for them and treat them as such. This lizard was hefty!! His tail base was huge, his feet and talons were huge, his eyes were huge and always looking me in the face!! I never did get a weight on him but he had to have topped the scales at about 45-50 pounds and he was still growing. He was fun while he was here but I can't say that I miss him.

I saw one at the local zoo and it was very big, not full grown, and the zoo staff said they were quite large. This link is an article which refers to them as the longest , monitors in the world (even longer then Komodo Dragons, but not heavier):
