what species of Corallus??

superdave1781 Apr 12, 2007 07:56 AM

hi everyone, I just got this guy this past weekend from a pet shop and I was wondering if anyone can properly ID the species. They had it listed as a "Red Cooks Tree Boa", but like most pet shops I believe they had it wrong. Thanks!

...that he(she) as deep, rich blood red eyes that appear amber at night when viewed with a flashlight. Absolutely beautiful!

Looks like a C. hortulanus to me, but I would post this on the treeboa forum to get a confirmation from people with more experience. Tree boas have been split up a lot and I can't say I know how to tell of the taxa apart.

I can say that we had a wc "Amazon" Treeboa about 20 years ago that looked just like that.

I feel pretty confident it isn't a annulatus or a caninus , but beyond that, find someone with experience telling them apart!

Please don't quote me on this, as I am in as much of a quandary over this genus as is Chris. I think it is C. enydris hortulana.
Common name may be garden boa.

Here's some current (?) taxonomy I got from Corallus dot com.

Corallus annulatus - Northern Annulated Tree Boa
Corallus blombergi - Ecuadorian Annulated Tree Boa
Corallus caninus - Emerald Tree Boa
Corallus cookii - Cook's Tree Boa
Corallus cropanii - Cropan's Boa
Corallus grenadensis - Grenadian Bank Tree Boa
Corallus hortulanus - Amazon Tree Boa
Corallus ruschenbergerii - Central American Tree Boa

This snake comes in several different color phases, and has had lots of taxonomic confusion as to exactly what name is used at any given time, and from what book, and when they were published!.

It' an "Amazon Tree Boa", which "Cook's Tree Boa" also falls into the category of.

Like the others stated, you should ask some others on the "Tree Boa" Forum for the latest taxonomic name being used, as they work with these animals on a steady basis, and would be more familiar with specific phases.

I'm pretty sure it's considered (Corallus hortulanus), but have seen several variations such as....(Boa hortulanus),.....
(Corallus enhydris), (Corallus enhydris hortulanus),etc....

The other forum will be able to give you the info on the latest name being used.

best regards,...Doug
