2 eggs!? Someone help me ensure safe hat

DarkBlades Apr 12, 2007 08:02 AM

For the past 3 days my female leo has been acting really strange. Seemed very stressed out, I found she had some eggs on her but wasnt sure when she was going to deliver. So I setup everything, moved the humid to a nice place where there was food a good amount of heat and humidity. around 5AM 2 eggs from what I see are there. Oh my god what a sight. I dont want to take them out to get a better look because she is hanging out with them but this is so cool. I really hope they are fertile. =D I cant wait to have little geckies, this is so awesome.

Can someone tell me the steps to see wether the eggs will be fertile and if indeed they are fertile what shall I do to ensure to safe hatching. =D

I am so excited! )

Well if you breed intentionally you should have done all your research before hand. Anyways, you will need anincubation system to incubate the eggs, unfortunatley they are to be removed asap, so the mom doedn't scratch, climb, or tear open the eggs, also so that she doesn't move them as the embryo can die if flipped upside sideways, or anyway but the way they were laid.

I did research. Only problem is that this is my first time. I have read alot on it but hands on experience from experts is always good too, right?

I just left them where they were but as soon as I make a proper incubator I will move them to there new place. In the Herpeculter of Leopard gecko book it says during the first 2 weeks the eggs can be held and moved around and you dont have to worry about rotation issues.

It says quote "You can handle newly laid eggs without concern of rotation issues for the first 2 weeks"

So does this mean I can take the eggs and place them in a good hatching position in the incubator?

That was also written in 2004, and much research has been done since then.

Personally everything i have read in book and internet, (from reputable breeders), i will not refer to just any website, that they say they should be put in the incubator just as they were layed. No messing around with them. I personally do this each time and have no problems. I have moved one onaccident and it didn't make it. So from my experience i take them out right as soon as she lays them and they go immediatly in the icubator. If temps are not correct right away for them, then they tend to be infertile duds.

So make sure they are in the incubator ASAP....you should have made the incubator when you first put them together and had it up and running to make sure temps and humidty were spot on.

If you have done the research you say then this would have all been cleared up before you even decided to put the male with the female!

All is done. Incubator/Temps and Eggs are set.
BTW, There was a book that said leave the eggs the way they were layed that was written by Ron and another Herp expert. But it was before the Herp of Leopard Geckos. But as said hands on Advice is better than reading anytime. We shall see if the hatch is a success in about 75 days.

Leolady is right on target with her advice. I've been breeding for quite a while and everything she said is absolutely right. The incubator should be set up weeks in advance and the temps stabalized and ready, the eggs should be removed as soon as they are discovered and should under no circumstances be rotated or tilted at all. Good luck, I hope the little ones make it.
