Corallus species ID needed!

superdave1781 Apr 12, 2007 08:09 AM

Hi everyone, I posted this question on the 'what kind' forum, but thought I'd post it here too. I got this guy(or gal) this past weekend from a pet shop. They had him shown as a 'Red Cooks Tree Boa', but like most pet shops I believe they had the species wrong. Can anyone properly ID the species for me?? It's hard to tell from the pic, but he has deep, rich blood red eyes that glow amber at night under the flashlight. Thanks!

Looks like a Garden phase amazon Tree Boa to me. The Cook's I have seen typically tend to be very dark, black type Garden types with red eyes. Realistically they're the same animal, an ATB but for a few extra bucks people are trying to say they are Cook Island boas. Looks healthy.

Actually, corallus cookii are found mainly on St. Vincent and the name has nothing to do with Cook Island (which I believe is in the Pacific and not the Carribean. St. Vincent does not allow export. Just ask the seller where the animal came from, because more than likely it is corallus hortulanus and not a cooks.

Thanks, to both of you, for responding! He/she is in very good health, except for a bad abscess on his head (center of top of head, half way between eyes and nostrils). Other than that he appears to be in perfect health. I have a vet appointment for him next week to get it checked out. As far as asking the seller, I got him from a pet shop that knew absolutely nothing about the snake other than someone sold him to them and said it was a 'Red Cooks Tree Boa'! Upon doing my own research, I found a couple of species of Corallus that looked very similar to mine. I did think the Amazon Tree Boa looked the most similar, but none of the pics I found showed one with red eyes. Knowing the species won't change how I feel for this guy (he's beautiful!) but at the same time, I do like to accurately know what I have!!
