This morning's panic

captotterboy Apr 12, 2007 09:52 AM

Hey,
So Charlie has inflamed sexual organs. My animal doctor said it was not life threatening.

This morening i noticed something was growing on one of them and i gently pulled it. It was a piece of the infection. I thought "hey great, this might help" until charlie started to bleed profusly. I grabed some paper towels and wet them down with warm water and held it there until it stopped. After it did it looked healthier than i have seen it in a while. To top that, Charlie has been acting healthier than i have seen him act in a while. He has happier colors, he is moving around as normal, he is eating, he is drinking, and both his eyes are open. Just in case i have a vet appointment at 330 today. I might have them amputate his sexual organs.

Yeah, i paniced.

Inflamed hemipenes could certainly be life threatening! Not to mention painful. Infections spead, bleeding and scarring can cause problems on their own. I think I would look for a second opinion. About your UV light...if it was a store brand you mentioned, I would not trust the product claims. Many herpers change the name of that particular business to something a lot less intelligent.

Yeah, thats why im heading to the doctor today.

Even if the screw in flourecent UVB bulbs only put out a bit of UVB, i still have two of them and a UVB heat buld that is 100w and brand new. He shouldnt have a problem with UVB. These are the bulbs:

as you can see on the packaging it simply says UV, not UVB. You need to get the right bulb, this could be part of his eye problem if you have not been using the proper light all this time. Get the ZooMed reptisun 5.0 fluorescent bulbs and change them every 6 months. date the bulb with a permanent marker when you first place it in service.

Check out this site for info. There ARE UVB fluorescent coil bulbs and this site covers them as well as all the rest.

Ditto on what Carlton said - find a vet that knows chameleons.

good luck - hope all works out!

But it does say UVB. Look at the bottom right corner. It says "optimal amounts of UVB and UVA" I figured it couldnt put out that much UVB so i got a second one and added the UV heat bulb by t-rex. I also have Charlie's cage sitting by the window so during warm days i can open it up and allow some natural (though screened) sunlight into the cage.

This is from the company:
"This super-efficient, 20 watt lamp offers the same output as 75 watts of incandescent lighting. It provides basking reptiles with purified, full-spectrum daylight, as well as optimal amounts of the UVB and UVA ultraviolet rays. The UVB rays are essential in helping your reptile process calcium for bone growth, while the UVA rays are psychologically beneficial. This lamp can be used with any ESU reptile heat or light dome (sold separately)."

i laugh at super efficient, but thats the reason i doubled it up. and added the UV heat bulb by T-rex products. Still not enough?

I also had something come up and i couldnt get the Charlie to the vet ( ASAP i will get him there.

Thanks for the help everyone,
Jeff

Hey,
The day he was ill i had another emergency come up and couldnt bring him in. I was worried all night, but the next day the Charles was acting happier than i have seen him in a while. Both eyes were consistently open, he ate like a pig for the first time in a while, he wasnt real defensive, the stress colors went away, so i think he may be getting better. I havnt rescheduled a doctor visit yet, i want to see if Charlie is on the mend first. Im just keeping a close eye on him. He really does like his new bulb.

Thanks everyone.
Jeff
