Mandarin. Sichuan or not Sichuan

formosa Apr 12, 2007 11:41 AM

Hi,

I keep some mandarins for several years now. Last year they produced their first babies. One guy bought a pair but later said they are noch sichuans. Do you think my amimals are Sichuans or not?

I'm courious about your opinion.

thanks

They have the appearance that is typically associated with the term in the hobby at this time. Whether that means that they are absolutely from that geographic area is something that we cannot answer. Also they are nice looking specimens. Congratulations on the breeding success. Please post photos of the offspring too.

isn't the name of the province generally spelled Szechuan in English? I haven't ever seen it spelled Sichuan. That would make you mispronounce the Sz at the beginning.

Of course, you could just use the chinese characters, but when you try to post those here, it comes out Žlě.

Szechuan should be the same as Sichuan is i found on the net.

Sichuan

Chris, from what I've read Sichuan is the pinyin version of romanizing the chinese word. Apparently pinyin phonetic rules have nothing to do with english phonetics. I don't speak chinese and I'm sure I don't pronounce it correctly and as far as I'm concerned if they don't use english phonemes (with the roman alphabet) then they don't want me to pronounce it correctly, so we're even. I use Sichuan because the ratsnake enthusiasts that I interact with (for instance K. D. Shulz) call them that and that's probably going to have to do for me. I'd love to have very exact knowledge of the locale of the animals I'm working with but other than the few privately collected specimens out there most of these animals are from the chinese food markets. Information on these animals appears to be sketchy and sometimes conflicting.

Best regards
John

I already sold all of them. I tried to take pictures but they have been nervous all the time, so the pictures are lousy.

Well, based on the parents they were probably nice-looking. By the way do you live on Taiwan?

The Mandarins have got to be some of the nicest looking snakes on the planet and yours are gorgious to be sure. Very nice yellow. I will own one of these beautiful snakes one day if I live long enough. In my opinion they are some of Gods prettiest works of art. Looks like a bee with scales.

Thanks for the fine photos...you are fortunate.
