Sand as a substrate for bts's? I worry about impaction with just about any of the substrates used, but I've got a request to see if sand would be a viable alternative. I personally would rather used cypress mulch if I have to use a more natural looking substrate, but would like some experienced opinions about sand?

We wouldn't consider using sand for any of our blueys. We have beardies, and will only use the cleanest dune sand for them - not even play sand.

I think the cypress mulch is by far the better idea.

sand would be utterly useless for blue tongue skinks.. these skinks like to burrow and dry sand just won't give them any ability to burrow. Not to mention it will be dry, dusty and irritating to the eyes etc.

These also are not dry environment animals. Mulch, leaf litter (clean), etc will be more appropriate for blue tongue skinks
