feeding question

wayne13114 Apr 12, 2007 07:50 PM

I have had my pair of FL kings for 4-5 years now. they were fed every week, except when shedding and refusing. they now eat FT medium rats every week. I was wondering what you feed your FL kings and how often. I was thinking of changing feeding times to 1 meal per 2 weeks. and thinking something a lil smaller any help would be great. thanks

Hello Wayne, my kings are all eating rats. I have had my female Florida king for 7 years. She is not a regular eater sometimes going a couple of weeks without showing interest in eating. To be honest I don't have a "regular" feeding schedule. I feed when my snakes start roaming,I let them tell me when they are ready to eat. This was not really an answer to your question but just letting you know that each snake is an indivual. As long as your snake is not too fat or too thin it is probably fine on your schedule. A medium rat is a nice size meal for a kingsnake(IMHO). At that age the growth has probably slowed down quite a bit.

I also agree about it being a good sized meal, I was pretty much wondering if it would hurt to switch to a mouse every other week.

If a med rat weekly has been working for you, what is your reason for wanting to switch to smaller meals every other week?

I am not saying it won't work.. But, before i give you my opinion I am wondering why you would want to make the change?

I think they are getting a lil obeese. and now that they are adults I don't need to "grow" them anymore I was thinking it would slow down how they grew and also maybe help them live longer?

OK, that sounds reasonable.. so give your idea a try and if they start losing to much weight pick it up a bit.. or switch of with small meals and larger meals..

To be honest with you i think your new feeding schedule will work fine.

good luck!

Mike
