a nasty foot nip

Nicholaswj Apr 12, 2007 07:59 PM

One of my favorite babies from last year recently (three weeks ago) recieved a nasty bite from a more aggressive (and now seperated) cage mate on his right rear foot. I was hoping it wasn't bad enough to cause any permanent damage, but over the last week its become obvious hes going to lose it. He is still moving around, eating great and doesn't appear to be in any pain. Other than his injury he is completely healthy and there isn't any infection. I'm very reluctant to take him to my vet due to the fact that other than his somewhat crispy foot hes fine. My question is this, will the bad foot fall off on its own or is it absolutely necessary to have it amputated? If it was affecting his health i wouldn't hesitate to take him in, but his behavior hasn't changed. Any opinions from experienced keepers would be great.I've dealt with a few tail and toe tips but a whole foot is new territory for me.
thanks-
the very small time breeder

In the past I've taken in dragons with this type of injury. Sometimes the dead tissue can spread up the limb. Unfortunatly the longer you wait the higher up the amputation may be. The vet cuts it where it turns black. If they don't see live tissue then they cut it higher until live tissue is found. A tail or toe is one thing but I would definately bring him to the vet for a foot. Sorry.

I took him to the vet today, and they're amputating as I'm writing this. I hope he can function with a nub. Thanks for the feedback.
