Buddy For Map Turtle

geckolovers Apr 13, 2007 06:46 AM

I have a Map Turtle, approx. 5-6 years old, a little over 4 inches in size. Obviously male. Very social, although he does not like being handled. Whenever we or our dog near his tank, he goes crazy, swimming wildly against the glass, following us as we (or dog) move along tank. He will ignore food, even his favorite treat, bits of filet mignon or bacon, to socialize. I am thinking he would be happier if he has a friend to bask and swim with. He is in 30 gallon tank with a Fluval 305 filter. I am thinking another male Map so they are similar in size. Is this a good idea? How would I intro his buddy into his tank? Should I worry about disease, even if I buy from reputable dealer? I have had people tell me turtles are not social, but if you could see our little guy's behavior, you would think different! TIA for opinions!
