An end to collecting herps in Texas

LBenton Apr 13, 2007 05:05 PM

Well, not yet, but that is the effort of HB 2414 proposed by Carl Isett. Please review the last few discussion on the Gray Banded Kingsnake Forum.

The short story is the bill will make it illegal to hunt anything along a right of way, such as a shoulder or roadway.

There are efforts to defeat the bill there, but anybody with an interest in stopping this needs to help. Right now we are sending letters, emails, faxes and making phone calls to voice opposition to this legislation.

Thanks

Lance Benton

...on River Road is still out there! But it will never be caught if HB 2414 passes because roadcruising and walking the shoulder for herps ANYWHERE in Texas will be illegal! Please go the the Graybanded Kingsnake Forum and get involved!

There have been five caught on RR. I've got the names and mileages of four, and Bob Ashley recently told me the name to one more person who has.
Aaron has a point. If there have been five, there will probably be more! We definitely need to act on this.

Is this really anything new? We have been told collecting from the car is illegal, it is interpretation of a law that bans hunting from a vehicle. How is this any different. When I talked with the wardens and officers patrolling the roads their gripe was stopping in the road without pulling onto shoulder. Is there a link to the Bill in question? I hear lots of talk but little detail. So far it does not sound any different then the way it has always been. No, I do not want to loose ground but I would like to read the Bill for myself. Somehow I do not feel they can regulate ANY activity on private land. I guess the government would own the setback for roads onto private land but arrest or ticket someone for walking along it? Even if it passes is enforcement even possible? Guess I have more questions then answers. If the impact is a real threat we need a copy of the Bill and a site to send electronic names and addresses protesting such a Bill. Dusty you already have a website, sounds like a good project for you I would be more than happy to take five minutes out of my day to fill in my coordinates in a letter of protest drafted by you or anyone else for that matter.......Bill

Dude, if you check out the alterna forum, all the answers to your questions are there.

Yes all hunting on the road and public right of way would be illegal. Public right of way includes the shoulder up to the fence line so even walking the cuts would be illegal.
To answer your other question, yes hunting private lands would be ok but how many of us have access to private lands and if so would want to be restricted to hunting only there? I have 5 acres in the Davis Mtns. but certainly don't want to be limited to just that.
Here is a link to the page that has the bill. When there click on one of the small icon under "bill analysis".

Why not? The regulate harvest of deer, rabbits, etc. on private land. They HAVE closed collection - even on private land - and they COULD do it again. This law wouldn't apply to private lands, though. Not yet....
