An end to collecting herps in Texas

LBenton Apr 13, 2007 05:05 PM

Well, not yet, but that is the effort of HB 2414 proposed by Carl Isett. Please review the last few discussion on the Gray Banded Kingsnake Forum.

The short story is the bill will make it illegal to hunt anything along a right of way, such as a shoulder or roadway.

There are efforts to defeat the bill there, but anybody with an interest in stopping this needs to help. Right now we are sending letters, emails, faxes and making phone calls to voice opposition to this legislation.

Thanks

Lance Benton

Sounds like an interesting approach to legislation. I wonder what impact it would have on road cruising in general. Since Klauber's days road cruising has been an excellent source of field information. This law may also impact another favorite behavior of many herpers, i.e. stopping to rescue animals from the road before they get hit. I guess you would be ok as long as you didn’t have any collecting equipment with you. What happens if you are returning from a legal collecting locality and stop along the road for field notes or to remove an animal from a dangerous situation.
