More South Texas snakes...

brhaco Apr 13, 2007 08:58 PM

Headed south last night. Conditions were ok temp-wise (mid-70s all night), but a strong 20-30 mph wind didn't help matters. Nevertheless, saw 14 live snakes between 8 and 1 am...The annulata was another "lucky friday the 13th" herp. It whipped across the pavement at 12:35. I decided to keep him to increase the genetic diversity of my breeding colony.

Who says Friday the 13th is unlucky!? Great pics! What type of snake is that in the last pic?

Brad, where were you? I just got back from Brewster county and the cold front blew us out with 2 flatheaded snakes, 1 Sceloprus merriami and a Texas horny toad. Flipped all day on the way home and drove from San Antonio down 16 to 624 to Corpus with only a red eared slider crossing around Poteet at 6:30 p.m. NIIIce annulatta!

Tod-

I found a good looking farm road east of Cotulla and just ran it all night (till 1 am anyway). As I said it was very windy and not a lot was moving, but I knew wind probably wouldn't stop annulata out "lookin for love".....In my favor was that the moon wouldn't rise until 4 am.

I'm going out Thursday for some daytime herping. I'll post pics of anything I find.

I hunted a little north of where you were and found half a dozen big atrox blowing around in the wind. I only hunted 2 hours however as I had to be back in SA by 11:00.

That's interesting, Chris-all the atrox we saw that night were small! I really would have liked to stay a couple of hours more, since it seems we saw more activity (other than early marcianus) the later it got....
