A POSITIVE-ly Unexpected Surprise

wetceal Apr 13, 2007 11:43 PM

Hello Everyone!

First off, I would like to congratulate everyone who has had baby boas already this season! I haven't had a chance to post on the forum at all these past few months but I do try to check out the threads regularly and have seen several awesome litters produced by many different breeders. So congratulations to you all who have been blessed with baby boas already!

We weren't expecting our first litter of boas until sometime around the end of this month - or so I thought! We have a couple of litters we are expecting this season that I am really excited about and looking forward to. And to be honest, our first expected litter for the season wasn't anything I was overly anticipating.

We acquired an adult female Type II Anery boa from another breeder back in the beginning of 2006. He got her from a friend of his so we really didn't have any information on her history. When we got her in, we ultrasounded her and she had very large follicles. At the time, the only male Nicaraguan Boa that we had was a male Type II Anery who was very small/young. Since we didn't have any other choices, we decided to give him a try.

He was probably just not mature yet because he showed absolutely no interest at all. No big deal. This year, we decided to pair this girl up with our male Het. T Positive Nicaraguan just to make some possible het. T Positive girls to raise up for future projects. This male was a very enthusiastic breeder and his efforts resulted in an ovulation.

Now I must have written the POS date down wrong because I wasn't expecting her to give birth until sometime around April 25th. So, you could imagine our surprise when we walked in this morning to find baby boas! Not only did we have baby boas a couple of weeks earlier than we expected, BUT...two of them were T Positives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So our female Anery Type II Nicaraguan boa is also 100% Het. T Positive...and we were fortunate enough to unwittingly pair her up with our male Het. T ! The final count on the litter was 10 live, healthy babies, 9 slugs and 2 stillborns. Unfortunately, one of the stillborns was also a T Positive. Of the babies, we ended up with 2 male T Positive Nicaraguan Boas and 3 male and 5 female normals 100% Het. Anery Type II and 50% possible het. T Positive - not bad at all!

I'm not sure if anyone else has produced T Positive Nicaraguan Boas that are 100% Het. Anery Type II but I am very excited about the potential of this project! Hopefully, in a few years we will be able to produce a T Positive Anery Type II Nic - in other words, a T Positive Nicaraguan version of the Snow Boa!

What a great way to start off the season! Hopefully our coming litters can rival this one!

Here are some photos of our surprise litter...

The T Positive males

The T males with the male normals 100% Het. Anery, 50% possible het. T Positive

The female normals 100% Het. Anery, 50% possible het. T Positive

Thanks for reading and looking! Let me know what you think!

The T-positive Nicaraguans originate from the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, and from that region many Hypos and Type II Anerys have been brought in. I do not belive that area is being exported from as much nowadays but it used to be the hot spot for Nicaraguans. If you notice among the original T-plus, Type II, Hypo, and Normal (especially the normals available long before any morphs were brought in that boosted the Nic popularity) the boas all had similar characteristics. Similar dark coloration, contrast in the tail blotches and the distint circle back pattern that was very tight but NEVER extended into the tail blotches.

Well with the popularity of Nics after those morphs coupled with over harvesting exporters moved to different regions. Which resulted in the WIDE variety we see in our Nicaraguans today.

So in short given the history of the area it is not unreasonable to believe that more animals from this region carry genes for the T-plus and Type II mutations.

One thing looking at your babies, the T-plus look a lot lighter than other new borns. Again it could be from purity. The only other new born T-plus I have seen were the pics from Jeremy's CA Motley litter and the CA Motley originated from Panama so those wouldn't be pure Pacific Coast Nicaraguan.

Any pictures of the Type II dam? You may also want to talk to Vin Russo, he and Tom Burke have been doing a lot of work with the Nicaraguan Anerys and have some information that might interest you quite a bit if you are not allready familiar with it.

in my post, I put that the babies are 50% possible hets. which is incorrect. I should actually have written 66% possible hets. because it was a 100% Het. x 100% Het. breeding.

Thanks for posting all the information Chris! These babies have a ton of coloration and are very brightly colored. I have never seen newly born T positive Nics before so I have nothing to compare them to. I will definitely take more photos of them after they shed.

I thought I had taken some photos of mom a couple of months ago but couldn't find them on this computer. I'll have to check my other computer. If I still can't find them, I'll try to take some new photos of her tomorrow.

Thanks,
Celia

You will have to talk to Tom and Amanda, since they are the only ones to see newly born T-plus Pacific Coast Nicaraguans.

I look forward to the pics! I haven't seen many Type II Pacific Coast locales though so maybe someone else can add from personal experience.

Ben Siegal (sp?) may be the one to talk to about what he thinks of the female being of that specific locale. He was the one who got the original T-plus Nics, and the other Pacific Coast Type II, Hypo and Normals.

What a great way to kick off a season. Doesn't get any better than that. We as collectors (and breeders) always wonder what if we picked up something that was MORE than we thought it was (or paid for). You have actually proven that it does happen every once in a while. How refreshing is that Thanks not only for the pix but for the story as well...this just made my night

to other breeders but never thought we would be so lucky! I've mostly heard of it happening with Ball Python breeders where a large number of animals are still being imported.

A good friend of ours had a normal female Ball Python that he raised up and decided to pair up with a het. Lavender Albino male to make some possible hets. The snakes bred and the female laid eggs and he hatched out TWO Lavender Albino Ball Pythons!

The odds of something like this happening is just crazy. I think there are several animals out there that are carrying genes that we are unaware of and may never be known because we didn't happen to pair that individual up correctly to express that gene. To luck out and blindly match that animal up with a mate carrying the same gene is just amazing. I'm still recovering from our surprise!

Thanks,
Celia

Celia, first off Congratulations. Secondly, please dont tell me that was one of the females I sold you. I think I might have to be sick, lol. Congrats again, John.

wetceal Apr 14, 2007 09:14 PM

she was one of the girls that we got from you. Sorry...I don't want to make you sick! She was the last big Anery Type II girl that we got from you. I don't have any good pictures of her (she's all skinny right now since she just gave birth) so if you don't mind, I would like to share some photos of her that you had originally sent me...

That is an awesome surprise! Very cool! I think a t positive anery will be awesome!! Congratulations those look beautiful!

wetceal Apr 14, 2007 09:22 PM

I've been thinking about what a T Positive Anery will look like and am excited to see what comes of this! I'm curious how the more colorful T Positive Albinos will affect the coloration of a Snow. Hopefully we won't need to wait too long to find out!

Thanks,
Celia
