Nearly stood on a cotton mouth

Justin Stricklin Aug 13, 2003 08:34 PM

Wooooooooooo!! I was just a few inches away from standing on a cotton mouth. i had rained al day and finaly stopped, so i went to that pond i usualy go to to find the big gravid female that I will not find. The grass and bushes have grown alot since i was there last. I was just walking and was goping to go between 2 bushes and Right under my foot I saw a real dark colored tail buzzing in the grass. I nearly had to go and change my shorts. it was just gaping it's mouth open and hising and rattling. If i collected venomous snakes, i would have gotten this one. I've never seen one this color. It had the bands like a timber rattler no rattle, the solid black tail, but no head stripes of any kind. It was solid black. the body was a greenish color with solid black banding. The green color was like that of a young burmese python. it was prob. about 3 1/2 - 4 feet long. It flattend out incredibly. I got a stick and gently moved it out of my way and put it in the water.

I think that you should see a venomus species every now and then so you can see the camo. it's a little scary. I was nervous the hole time I was hunting the rest of the day. I usualy just walk right thru the bushes. i almost did then too. If I had I would be in deep crap. both with the snake and my parents. It sure keeps you on your toes though. i've only came acroos a few other cotton mouths before. That is by far the closest.

By the way I saw no other wild life but the cotton mouth. i have jabbered on enough i think. if i find time i'll try ot gte those pics i think i owe peirson.

Just wondering, where are you? In my experience, cottonmouths are not that bad of snakes. I have stepped and even stood on them plenty of times (the price you pay when you go looking for them...sometimes we get over 30 in a day) and nothing has ever happened. I would much rather step on a cotton than an atrox or horridus. They are usually pretty quick to get of the way as well. Andy

Northwest AL. There is not really many at all here. i have not seen many at all. All the other ones that I have seen were quick to get out of my way except this one. it stayed, hissed, flattened it's body, and gaped open it's mouth the hole time I saw it till Iput it in the water. Never stood on one before though, so i don't know the temperment of wild snake in my area. I would rather stand on a cotton mouth than and atrox. i don't recall what a horridus is. I suck a scientific names. Speaking of that what is a cotton mouth's scientific name?
