I just got a bearded dragon a week ago. the pet shop owner told me she was a female. when she feels threatened, she turns her beard black, i thought that was a male feature, am i right?

Nope both guys and gals do that. Is she only doing it as a display or is it always that color? If she is always dark that could mean her basking spot is not hot enough, or her UV light is not close enough. They darken up to absorb sun (heat & uv lights).

flip him/her over and look on the hind legs- if there is a little row of bumps- depending on the size of the beardie- they may look like pimples- and if its too small, you may not know what to look for unless you have already seen it.
anyway- if there is a row on the underside of each hind leg- its a boy-
no row- girl

males i have noticed do the black beard thing more than females- but thats jsut me.
