Mystery Frog

pdickens Apr 14, 2007 04:12 PM

A teacher friend of mine gave me a frog that he called a "African Leopard Frog". I'm not familiar with such a frog and have not been able to identify it from the internet. He said his grandson paid about $100 for it at a pet store. He grew tired of it after a few weeks and grandpa grabbed it for me. Unfortunately, I'm a snake guy with limited experience with frogs. Can anyone tell me what it is? It is about 4 inches long snout to vent. Thanks in advance!

PS I'm guessing the kid got ripped off by the pet store.

try researching under the name Rana pipiens or Northern Leopard Frog, a species that is very common in feilds near steams and in or around ponds. if you friend paid $100.00 for one frog, thats about $95.00 to much. some pet stores, like petco carry them, but they are quite abundant in the wild and there are multiple species native to the US. there care is similar to that of a bullfrog, though they are quite at home in feilds and forests as long as water is not to far away. i have found them as far away as two miles from the neartest pond or creek.

i also have never heard of an african leopard frog, there's southern and northern leopard frogs. it's some kind of Rana, and I think it's a leopard frog. and yes, the kid get ripped off, or the grandpa was lying. good luck!
