sure most of the time....had a rat in the basement used a rat trap.. heard the wack went to see the thing was not dead but its eye popped out had to take it out back and use a rock so not always 100% a quick death....

What a great post to reply to fresh out of detention....
Your kidding right? Was this a rat that was just cruzin' in your basement, or a feeder that got loose?

it was a wild rat..no joke it got half its head crushed and was still alive

nboles1215 Apr 14, 2007 08:44 PM

Huh....I am not telling you to stop feeding your snakes from the rats in your basement, however, wild rodents can carry some nasty parasites that can and will harm you reptiles. Just food for thought....

HMMM never said i feed it to my snake..and i don't have a basement anymore..and have never feed my snakes anything wild..

jyohe Apr 14, 2007 09:04 PM

she killed the wild rat and I don't think fed it.....

don't post stuff like "had to use a rock" ....anti-hunters, anti-trappers, and anti-snake people use any crap at all against us....

.......rat traps can be good to use.......IF you get it in the exact correct spot........

that won't happen 95 % of the time........

too much blood if you cruch sinuses, not fast if too far back...etc etc.....

.......FULL body slam.......CO2........suffocation by holding them yourself ........and let the snake do it.....

...anyways.......

........funny how "how to kill a rat" can get so much attention........cavemen killed and ate them millions of years ago with no problems......and millions of people since.......

Yup, rat trap's a bad idea. To many variables, to few clean deaths.

I keep mouse traps in my rat room just in case any get loose. The few that I have caught - some were dead immediately, some not. A rat trap is much more powerful, so it might be quicker.

I would not use it as a method of dispatching a rodent though. Not too mention how messy it can be.

This is a discussion that we had a few day ago on anothr thread that was posted. Why do experienced ball keepers in this forum continue to want to use inhumane means of killing their live rodent prey to feed to their balls? If you are going to purchase live rodents and inhumanly kill them by using a rat traps or mice traps why go trough all the trouble either purchase fronzen/unthawed or let the balls do what is natural.

I was one of the participants in the extended posting that happened a couple days ago, and respectfully, I think you missed the point then and now. Snakes kill their prey because they have to, and they do it by whatever means they can. Constriction or invenomation may be nature's adaptation, but it's not instant, as you know. The prey suffers, at least for a short time. And, occasionally the prey fights back. Sometimes the snake get hurt in the process. It's not a perfect situation, but what option does a wild snake have?

On the other hand, we give captive snakes an option by feeding them dead prey.

Humane, in my opinion--and in the opinion of lots of others here too--is to kill the rat or mouse as quickly as possible. It's humane in two ways: 1. The rat or mouse dies instantly or nearly so and 2. the snake is at no risk of getting bitten and injured. Yes, it's still killing. No one denies that. But, we try to keep suffering to a minimum for both predator and prey.

Why do you think satisfying either of these two goals is inhumane? Buying frozen isn't more humane unless your method for killing a rat or mouse is prolonged. Other people are still doing the killing when you buy a bag of frozen feeders. It just saves you the trouble and emotional baggage that goes along with doing it yourself. Same deal as buying burger at the grocery store or wearing a leather belt.

I think the decision to feed carnivorous reptiles has certain responsibilities that go along with it, which one way or the other involves death. That's the hard truth of it. So, I suppose one might say that what you exchange for that is a bit of cruelty. Something has to die because you have the pet you have. A herbivorous reptile or amphibian wouldn't require the same responsibility of us.

Maybe the semantics are what's hanging you up. We all want minimal suffering for both predator and prey and no injury to our snakes. Seems pretty humane to me. But, there's still death involved. No way around that.

These work awesome for prekilling - I have a friend that swears by hers - of course she is still paying $4 per rat and I'm only paying what averages out to $1 per rat by buying bulk Frozen. But for just one or two snakes - these kill quick, painlessly and without blood and guts!
