FR, Nonmonitor question

Varanids_Rock Apr 15, 2007 12:37 AM

Out of curiosity, how do you go about keeping tortoises idoors? Do you keep them in trough cages with fairly deep soil and a household light bulb or two, like monitors? If yes, do the animals do any burrowing or do they just use the soil for nesting?

Thanks.

Cheers,
Ryan

Hi Ryan, Remember to consider that I developed this method with other reptiles not monitors. So yes, I keep our monitors like I kept other reptiles, deep substrate and choice of temps and the ability to create their own shelter(by their design).

I have always raised torts with the ability to burrow. Althought like monitors many species are leaf burrowers. Or shallow leaf litter over dirt.

The Golden Greek babie I recently hatched really like to burrow in leafs.

Heres a pic of a wild local tort nestled in plant cover.

Most people think they borrow in the ground, that is extremely rare around here. Here they mostly shelter in rock shelters and plant cover. Cheers

I was just curious as to how you kept them. I knew you developed your techniques originally with snakes (kingsnakes, I believe), but I wondered how you kept your turtles/tortoises.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Ryan
