having trouble varying bosc's diet

cj01082005 Apr 15, 2007 08:26 AM

greetings everyone,

I am having a problem with my bosc as he will only eat crickets and nothing else as he is very young still i know that crickets are sufficient for now but i would like to add in f/t pinkies and small meal worms but he has no interest in them. I have talked to the vet at his well visit checkup and my vet told me to force feed him a meal worm or f/t pinkie but i have never liked the idea of force feeding as it is far to stressful on the animals. he gobbles crickets fine about 2-3 dozen a day minimum but a varied diet is always best for any animal. so any advice will be much appreciated

Whats wrong with crickets? Try other insects like roaches if you feel the need to diversify.

Personally I would make sure your conditions are correct...for temps and humidity. Then leave the poor thing alone. My first Sav ate bugs for over a year before she decided she could eat other things. BUGs are their primary natural diet. Just BUGs. Your monitor doesn't have to have something different. Get a nice Hissing Roach colony going and be happy they don't stink like mice.
My 5 yo savs still prefer roaches over rodents. Though it takes way more to fill them up so they get rodents too.

I'm not mean. You're just a sissy.

My advice, find a new vet.

Then check your husbandry, with the right conditions, a healthy monitor will eat anything. I mean anything.

If it is eating bugs without a problem, feed it bugs, bugs are good for a yound growing monitor.
Just dust them and feed away.
