First Fuzzy Went Well

EddieF Apr 15, 2007 09:11 PM

Belle's first fuzzy went well, despite the fact that she's completely cloudy and looks like she can't see at all! The fuzzy wasn't very large, and she had eaten a couple of pinkies just a couple days ago. Between that and being so close to shedding we weren't sure if she'd go for it, but she did.

Thanks to everyone here who A) convinced me she was ready for fuzzies, and B) gave me the idea to feed her in another container within her tank. We didn't wait for her to climb out, just sort of tipped her out and it worked great.

Now I understand the plan is to keep jamming fuzzies into her gullet, sit back and watch her grow!!

Its unusual that your snake ate while in the blue. It must have been a very hungry.

Your snake will atart having sheds more frequently and in a month from now you will have to get hoppers.

keep up the good work!

I was surprised also. But she has never refused food, even when we realized we were underfeeding and drastically increased her intake. She is quickly going to outgrow her current tank, I'm going to check out the other forums for ideas on good looking setups now that with a bigger tank I'll have room for more hiding places and stuff.

For these Florida Kings, what size tank do you end up with? We were looking at 29 longs and 30 breeders.

Thanks.

Eddie,
three months from now you are going to be amazed at the growth your snake is putting on! If you keep adjusting the size mice as it grows, its growth will be amazing!

I have mine in a 55 gallon. He just shed today, so not having eaten in a week he's going to be mighty hungry!

Have a great day,
Ramon.

do you happen to have a picture of your entire 55 gallon setup? Trying to get some ideas. It will be fun 'furniture shopping' for her.

Also, even though she's small still, any harm in her next tank being her adult tank? Would that be too big for her now? Trying not to spend money on a tank she'll outgrow in 6 months but if I'm feeding her in a separate container, finding food will not be a problem.

Thanks.
Ed.

I'll post of pic of my set up later today.

I'm told that going with a big tank too soon can be stressful for a small snake. It didn't seem to bother mine, but I had plenty of hides.

Hey Eddie,

took some pics of my setup, but I am having trouble uploading them to Kingsnake at the moment.
I'll post them when I can.

Ray.

Eddie,

here is a pic of my 55 gallon setup. Some folks won't like the shoebox as a hide, not natural enough, but my kingsnake doesn't complain! I have crumpled newspaper in the shoebox, and it is his favorite place. I also have a cardboard tube, and he used to love it, but has outgrown it. As your snake grows, make sure it has a water dish big enough to get into. My snake takes a swim a couple of times a month. The towel is where I place the mice. They are dry and this helps to keep aspen off the mice.
Have a great day!
Ray.

Thanks Ray. So do you have an UTH under the shoe box?

I recently got a larger water dish so she can soak in it (although I've never seen her do it, in fact I've only seen her drink water once) and I couldn't find her the other day. She had gotten underneath the water dish (which I thought was placed directly on the bottom of the tank). Curled up as comfy as could be. I asked my wife, 'how'd she get under there?' She said, 'she's a snake.' Oh yeah. Forgot.

Thanks again. As soon as we upgrade I'll post some pictures of what we come up with.

Yes, I have a UTH under the shoe box. I bought one of the larger ones, so it covers a large area on that half.
My snake didn't take to water right away, not till he had grown a little. They're fairly uncomfortable moving around when they're small. Yours will go to the water more as it grows.

And, yes they can sure squeeze under anything! Mine gets under the water dish, and it's no small water dish! They feel secure in the tightest of places.

Glad you're enjoying your snake, this is my first and I have really enjoyed him.

Ray.

Forget the haters, man, that's a sweet set up. I use cardboard tubes and old food boxes too. The snakes dig it! My wife laughs, but nothin' beats the ol' ghetto snake hides.

ghetto snake hides - lol!!!
True! I was going to look for something more 'natural', but figured if the snake was content what the heck.

Thanks!

Good point. From what I've been reading, sounds like some of the most natural habitat might be simulated if you could cram a car hood into your tank!
