New to chondros

newblood85 Apr 16, 2007 08:05 AM

Hi, I am getting my first Chonro tomarrow. Im getting a red sorong. This is my first arboreal snake. I have a few questions about set ups though. I have 2 perches and a heat lamp with a red bulp, paper towl substrate and a water dish. I want to varify heat and humidity to see if I have it right. for heat I found 88 to be the max and 75 to be the lowest. Is this right? what is the best heating to house a 3 month old? also humiditys, I have only found a few sites that list the humidity. I have found 75-80% and 65-90%. which is it? also I have read that keep the hums up during the day and at night let the cage dry out a bit. is this good practice? also I am housing it in a rubbermade with a locking lid. any other info would be nice. Thanks.

Hello,

I'm new to these snakes to and ordered the More Complete Chondro, by Greg Maxwell. IMO you HAVE to read this (especially newbies) if you want to own one of these snakes. In the mean time here are some good caresheets and websites.

Might be a bit late in the game to suggest this but I would not purchase a 3 month old animal if this is going to be your first chondro. You should look at getting a more established animal from a reputable breeder. I realize you must now already have your heart set on making this deal tomorrow but I would think twice. That is a very young and delicate age. Most breeders I am familiar with would not sell an animal that young. If this situation follows the typical trend, you will be back here a month from now asking for help to get it to eat. I hope I am wrong and I apologize for coming at you with such a negative attitude but this has become an all too familiar scenario.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. These are wonderful animals and a joy to keep. In my opinion, no other species compares. Take my suggestion as just that, a suggestion, and don't let it deter you from asking for help should you need it.

Your setup sounds fine. I suggest a quality thermostat to regulate the temps and humidity should be around 80% on average. Some will say 70%, some will say 90%. Fact is, hygrometers priced in the range for most hobbiest aren't going to measure it accurately enough to tell the difference. I use a cheap Exo Terra hygrometer. As long as it is in the 75%-80% range, I am happy. Some don't use any device at all. As long as you see moisture collect on the sides, you should be fine. Letting it dry out either overnight or every couple of days is necessary to prevent mold.

Good luck,
Bart

I might add that you keep your warm side temps at 82-85. One of the guys on the other forum did a thermograph of his snakes and found that if his thermostat was set to 85, under the heat panel they were getting up to 90 degrees of body temp. No wonder most of our animals are sitting on the cool side most of the time! I've since turned down the temps on everyone to 82.5 and I'm seeing a better feeding response in my one Biak that was grounding herself and refusing food.

I thank you guys for the advice. Bart, I wish I would have known that a few days ago. I think I got this thread confused with another. I did get the 3 month old. Hopefully he will do well. The breeder (exoticjungle) said that he was shedding flawlessly and eating flawlessly.we will find out. i am keeping my humidity in the 70's. i use an indoor outdoor therm with a hydrometer built on to it. i put the probe on one side and the unit on the other to know both temps. My temps are 79-85 f. He did scare the crap out of me. I woke up this morning to just some poo on the floor and no snake. i started to freak out thinking "oh my god i lost a $400 snake." Not a pleasent thought. but then i found him reading the classifieds in the newspaper... He is a cutie i did post pics on another post or you can go to my site www.freewebs.com/bodom85 to see more. Please if you go to the site, dont judge it to harshly, its under construction and im still not sure of where to go with it. thanks
