Put it down as bedding.

Thanks. where is the best position to put the Shedding Hide. I have an under thank heater at one end and the red heat light at the other end. Tank is 2 1/2 feet long.Is is best to put the shedding hide at the end where the under tank heater is?

hmm it would be probly more useful under the heat mat, but depends really. you could have it on the cool side for a nice cool humid hide, or you oculd have it over the heat mat where the water will prettty much constantly condense and be nice and warm.

do you have a warm and a cool side...? usually red lights are used for heat, although a 2 1/2 foot tank is rather big, and if the only heat sources are the UTH and the IR light (infra-red/incandescent, red in other words lol), suppose it might be best they're at opposite ends. i tend to think of my UTH as the hot end. but its your call. try experiment, although it should probably be at the opposite end of your leo's current "dry" hide. it'll make him adventure and explore more ^^

I have my Infa red light at one end and the UTH at the other as i have the Infa red on a 12 hour cycle (day to Night) I use the UTH for night time and that is where his hide is. He seems very comfortable and is always in and out of the hide during the day and night. He spends most of the day under a log at the Infa red side and at night gets into the hide which sits on top of the UTH (Subtrate in between obviously). I have the moss but i am concerned as to where to put the Moss hide. I think it would be best to put it at the end where the UTH is but would it dry out quickly or damage the UTH as the hide is a normal decorative hide with no bottom on it.

well the UTH should be water proof, eg have a plastic coating to stop damage being done to it, so i dont think the dampness of it would make any difference, although i suppose they arent exactly made for "swimming" lol. best thing to do is make a bed out of the bedding, as it'll be hard to get the leo to sit on top of it lol and dont douse it in water, just pour it little by little til you think its suitably wet/damp. hope this helps

I'm confused... Is your UTH sitting in the tank, most of the ones I see have an adhesive backing and can easily be stuck under the glass on the outside bottom of the tank. Then you wont have to worry about it getting wet. Also, I don't know how well moss keeps moisture, but I use paper towels in my hide, and I have to mist it nightly. Its on the warm side of my tank over the UTH. If your just using a hide, just place the moss down under it and I use a spray bottle and mist it nightly. Good luck hope this helps.

The UTH is inside the tank and has a plastic coating on it. I plan on putting the Moss in it like a bed and spray it nightly to keep it moist. The UTH is covered with woodchip subtrate and is nice and warm. I think im doing everything right but i would like you guys to guide me if im not.

When i say i plan to put it inside i mean inside the hide . Also as the hide has no bottom on it (Unlike a tubberware box) will this matter?

jamster Apr 18, 2007 12:40 PM

oh it should be fine if its under a layer of substrate, although yeah, UTH's are usually under the tanks, but yeah the plastic coating is to stop damage to your leo etc, but it should be fine if you mist the moss nightly
