Hypo Hondurans

DanW Apr 16, 2007 04:17 PM

I have heard that many if not most hypos get dull with age and look like normal hondos. There have been pictures posted of adult hypos that are absolutely incredible. Are most hypos ugly as adults and if so is there a way to tell which ones are going to be bright and clean? What do extreme hypos look like as adults?

Thanks,
Dan

Great Question.Yes and no is the answer.LOL...When hypos first started out (like evrything does) they were screamers as babies and yes as the reached adults they were just slightly better than good tangerines.
As line breeding started and more and more animals were produced we have selectivly bred for the better, cleaner looking animals.
Now most of the hypos on the market are refined to were there is little tipping even as adults and there black bands are a deep purple or even grey/greenish cause they are so refined.

Here is a old school hypo as a young adult.I produced this girl in 97 and she was awesome when she hatched. She was from het to het and she looked 1000 times better than the rest of the clutch.
Looking at her now you wouldn't even really know she is hypo.

here is another adult that was produced in (02) so she is a couple generations better.

here is a adult male that has no tipping and is pinstriped to boot.his orange is almost see through and he is the best non extreme I have ever seen.I produced him in (04) and he is a great breeder.

and here is the best of the best with a adult extreme. They don't get any better than this unless its a extreme ghost.

hope this helps a bit. Also there is a wide aray in all hypos with the extreme being the best at this time. There are some outstanding tri-colored hypos also with the first ones having much tipping but now they are getting better and better.

Hey Shannon,

That's a great parade of hypos in chronology of how the gene was improved over time. Do you have a bunch of albinos that you can chronologically show how the albino gene improved over time (from start to the best one these days)?

Also, what did you think of the hatchrite when you used it with your gecko eggs or some of your other reptiles?

Thanks,

Ray

Thanks Ray,
I will do the same with the amels.
I have some leapord Gecko eggs cooking in it as we speak and it seams to hold water a little better than vermeculite.I am still a little worried though as I will be getting some very high end eggs pretty soon.
I will see what happens the next three weeks with it.

Well Ray was asking about some albinos kinda in order as they have gotten better over the last ten years or about 3-4 generations.

This was my first albino hondo and she was produced in 98 from a couple 96 animals.I paid $2k for this lone female and paid 1k for a het male.
Anyway, her she is (I still have her also)laying a clutch a few years ago.

then,my friend back east had purchased a couple of the very first animals available from B.H.B in 96 and by 98 he had bred them and had outcrossed the male to a good tangerine.I was lucky enough to get a pair of the first tangerine albinos in the year 2000.Here is a pic of them breeding in 2003.Remember that these were first generation tangerines and were some of the best around.

here are a couple of the babies.as you can see the left one is a pretty nice tangerine (well it was then LOL..)

here is another one of there hatchlings.

now from breeding dbl-het hybinos and whatnot we are seeing bi-colored or 50/50 ratio (white width to orange)tangerine amels. The sky is the limit and they will keep getting better.

here is a 2005 female I am bringing up.She should go next year and I can't wait as I will be usuing a v.p male on her.

You have also seen all Don Shores great amels below and the reverse albinos are cool.Like I said the sky is the limit.

Yeah, I will be concerned too when used for the 1st time on high end eggs. So maybe this year, I will use the old fashioned vermiculite on the high end hondo eggs and then maybe one clutch of least importance using hatchrite.

Great posts Shannon. The hypo timeline post is neat too! Thanks for sharing

Does an open mind let more in?

Thanks Shannon. I wasn't sure if you saw them. I do know you have nice tangerines. I guess every year we try to improve by breeding the best together. I hope to get an extreme ghost. I have a trio of extreme hypos from an extreme by ghost breeding but we will see.

shannon brown Apr 17, 2007 11:47 PM

Good luck Don,I am sure that you will produce extreme ghosts as the extreme gene I think is pretty strong and since you have extremes from a ghost your more than half way there.I have a ghost thats from a ghost to extreme het anery and he is very different looking and may even be a low end extreme ghost.
I will prove him out next year for sure but looks like he may even go this year.I am trying him on a extreme female so if nothing else if he throws good sperm I will get some extremes that are 100% het anery.
