Another "business" question, of sorts...

kthulhu Apr 16, 2007 07:33 PM

I am hoping I could get some advice from some of the more experienced breeders/hobbyists out there. I would like to start getting into the breeding business, and when I say business, I don't mean full time breeder, more of like a part time thing on the side and a means to maybe earn some extra income while I'm still in school and eventually build up my collection. I suppose after all that, I'm looking for some advice or direction as to what I should get next. I currently have a normal male and a pastel male (I know that's not exactly conducive to breeding) I know I could go the route of getting a few normal females to breed to my pastel male or get another morph to breed to the male. I will definitely be attending the Hamburg show in a few weeks and would like to get something there.

Thanx in advance for any input
Brian

the best way that I know of to earn a few extra bucks is go to your local wal-mart and get a part time job stocking shelves. You will make money, you won't go crazy thinking about what to get next, you won't go crazy hoping that $5000 snake breeds/eats/sheds/poops, you won't get tired of hearing how the market is crashing, lol.

Well since I will be working full time this summer doing field research on P. melanoleucus and in the fall I will TAing part time, going classes, and probably doing a lab rotation, the whole stocking selves at walmart really isnt an option...

I apologize if in my previous post as someone who is just looking to make a fast easy buck off the ball python market. I've been keeping reptile for well over ten years now and am recently getting into ball pythons. I've wanted to breed for a while and now that I will be moving into my own place, I'll finally have some room to start. So I guess i was just looking for a little advice or a point in the right direction, as to what I should look into purchasing to go with my male pastel that would help kick off my future breeding endeavors.

If you already have a pastel male and no females, I would jump the middle stages, and purchase a female spider. Then your first breeding results could be bees, spiders, pastels, and normals. Good luck on breeding!

I went that same rout a couple of years ago. I was not doing it for extra money for school but to help fun research. I also did not start with BP but I had several pet Corn Snakes of diferent morphs. One day I just put snake A in with snake B and out came 17 eggs about a month later. One thing to consider and this is the only reason I would not recomend it is this kind of thing takes a lot of time, Remember I did this to help fund research but I find now it cuts into my research time and I am able to do less of it therefor dont need the extra funding now. Just think of it this way. My first tiem I had 17 eggs, All of the hatched. I already had manny of the sold before they hatched but not all of them. this was a coupld of years ago. I still have 2 snakes from that clutch witch I have to take care of. Feed, clean, water. It all takes time and would not be good if it takes time away from your school or any important field work you are doing at any given time. On top of that I have not made much from breeding anyway. When you subtract income from expence I have made enough to buy a few dinners and thats about it. Maybe if you are not into stocking shelves at Walmart "I dont blame you" you can contact your local Zoo or Preserve and see if they need any extra help part tiem a coupel of days a week. I dont know how it works but posably extra creadit even for school? If nothing ells you will be paid and also get important field experience for the future witch will pad any resume. Good luck with what ever you decide to do and I hope I helped a little
