Roaches

2doxies Apr 16, 2007 08:42 PM

I am getting ready to order more silkworms and I'm thinking about roaches as well. Mulberry has discoids and dubia. In terms of prices, you get double the amount of dubia for the same price as the discoids. Any input on preference would be great. What is the easiest way to set up for roaches? If I just want to order some to try, will I need to have everything set up? Do they taste better plain or dipped in chocolate?

Great question, I was just talking about what kind I want to order for the dragons, so I can't wait for the replies.
Normally I would say every thing is better with chocolate but I draw the line with chocolate dipped roaches.

dubia are good roaches to feed. larger than discoids, but discoids are usually cheaper. dubia are easy to care for but kinda slow growers. get pretty big too, so not as many to fill up your dragons. another good one is Lobster roaches. smaller, about the size of large crickets, some bigger, but cheapest roach and fast breeders and growers. only draw back is they climb glass and other containers, dubia do not. easily taken care of tho with bug stop or bug boundry. roaches are better than crickets by far, more meat less water. i hate crickets, and will no longer use them anymore as a feeder unless i have to but i keep a good stock of lobsters on hand.

Yes someone's like me, no more crickets unless needed. There's a HUGE selection of roaches to pick form. Under the classified on kingsnake some people have great prices on roaches. You can get what's good for you, your wallet and more importantly your dragon(s)
I have Dubia Blaptica (again I think I got the name wrong), The common name is Orange Spotted Roach. Easy to sexy, no smells(at all), no noise; and what I love the most is NO FLING OR CLIMBING! I'm like most people and don't want a home of roaches so those were a HUGE must for me. And I'm happy with.

I might have the name backwards... but those are what I got. Easy to tell males from females which is good so you don't feed off all your females and not know it. And the best part is THEY DON'T FLY OR CLIMB like other roaches. The set up's pretty much the same as crickets: food, water, lots of hiding spots.

Thanks for the responses! Okay...so same set up as crickets, but do they need heat? House is kept at 70. Approx. how many roaches for an adult? Don't laugh, but do they just start breeding or do I have to do something special (like candles and music) Do they need to be dusted with calcium? On that subject...should I be dusting the silkworms and butterworms? Sorry for all of the questions, but I've just eliminated crickets and I'm setting up for all of the other yummy possibilities! Napoleon thanks all of you!

continue to dust with calcium same as you do with roaches. roaches are just higher in meat to shell ratio, may have more calcium too but still use a supplement.

3-5 good size dubia roaches (about 2 inches or so) are good for an adult dragon. of course if they want to eat a few more that wont hurt. breeding females will probably eat more at first.

roach set up....dark rubermaid container, big one. dont use the clear ones, they like dark areas. poke air holes in lid. put abiout 5-6 sheets of egg crate, stand them up in there against eachother. roach food, and water. easy way to give water is a soaked washcloth or sponge sitting in a plastic dish with water. this prevents roaches drowning. water crystals work too.
