When to sell babies?

sned25271 Apr 16, 2007 09:54 PM

Well, I just had my first clutch of Veileds hatch; 16 in all. They are so cool. Since I will not be able to keep them all, I will eventually have to sell them on Kingsnake or to a local reptile store. What is an acceptable age or size to sell them at? Someone told me 3 months but they could be almost full grown by then.

Almost full grown at three months eh? What kind of steroids are you using to make chameleons grow 400% faster than normal?

Below is a ~4 month old panther chameleon.

Veileds can be sexually mature at around 6 months. You should look up the care sheets for veileds here on kingsnake or another website to see when. All of this is information that is already out there and can be readily found.

For veileds, three months is a good time to consider selling/shipping. They're slow-growing for the first couple of months. At three months, they really hit their stride. So that's a good window--establisehd enough to ship and still small enough that you don't have to separate them all out. By five months, they're starting to get pretty big.

I sell my panthers anytime after month 4 and preferably before month 7. Harder to sex panthers before month 4 than veilds. I also think 4 months makes for a better, sturdier animal for the stress of moving, especially if you plan to ship any distance. As I separate at month 2, and have sufficient housing for a number of extra adults, this isnt an issue for me. Anyone who breeds should have extra enclosures, in my opinion, as not all will sell right away (assuming you care at all about who they go to).

Yes, you're right, they'll be up to 9 and 10 inches in 3 months. Panthers are very tiny when they hatch and they don't
reach a good size until they are about 3 months. Veileds hatch out at a bigger size usually and they are actually ready to go at 3 weeks or more. I would wait until they are a month old and then sell them as quickly as you can, otherwise they'll eat up your potential profit Congratulations by the way and good luck with them.

I don't understand how a veiled chameleon would possibly reach 9-10" at 3 months of age.... This thread makes it look common knowledge, but I'm baffled....

I've had it happen dozens of times. I'm not saying that every Veiled in the clutch will be in the nine or ten inch range, but its happens for a few.

We agree with you Tyler. We have seen hundreds of veileds hatch and grow - and rarely is there a 3 month old that grows to 9" in that amount of time. Bad for the bones anyway!

Glad someone else sees it realistic as I feel I do... Everyone keeps throwing out these rumors of "special" un-natural gutloads, and I see that being possible with the use of those, but why would someone want something that has been grown at an obviously accelerated rate? Like you said, the bones couldn't possibly be solid.
