Hog island mix female best to breed with

BioDemon Apr 16, 2007 11:08 PM

I have a columbian hog island female mix in hypo colors, even has a light brown toung, and was wondering what type of male I should breed it with. Another hog to make 75% hogs, An anerythristic to start a ghost project, another hypo, What are some of your idias, opinions?

There is a market for any boa but there are many who would not want a "mutt" or mixed breed animal. That said, how much time and money do you want to invest into this project? Any recessive trait will require two generations to accomplish.

IMO, bottom line is decide what you want to have or produce and then figure out how to get there. Breeding your mixed lineage female will produce babies that will be somewhat harder to market or find homes for.

For me I love color so hypo would be the way to go with her.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Thanks, I think hypo would be the way to go because according to most research I've done salmons, hypos, ex were mostly, but not all started by breeding boas constrictor imper. island groops with mexican, honduran imper, and other boas. They share the same scientific names but many island imperators are smaller and naturally hypo.
I could get something close to a sunset boa witch is a mix of Hog island and hypo. But has to be homozygous for both. That would take a couple breedings. Strange to me how many people talk so badly about muts yet never realize how many designer morphs started that way. Science says BCI BCI = BCI

just cuz designer boas are mutts doesn't mean i want some silly normal mutt cross dumb boa. sure they can look pretty, but there is so much crossing and muddying that occurs that why would you wanna do more. Sure the sunsets are pretty, but I would pay more for a pure hogg then for that garbage... this is only my opinion though, so take it as you will, I in no way am trying to lessen your interest in breeding, which I'm sure it won't, just showing my opinion

Sorry to say but mutts are not dumb as a pure brother to sister or parent to sibling PURE breed as I often find. More diverse genes produce potentially smarter healthier snakes Period. I have a mutt so perhaps I should breed it with another mutt. Or perhaps I'll get a hog and make 75% hogs. A classic case of inbreeding is the Danish pure blood line of Brazilian amarali boas witch have allot of digestive troubles and many babies die. Its a shame as I think they are one of the most beautiful boas. Too bad no one out crossed them with Bolivian amarali to prevent the problem. I like pure breeds and mutts that are bread responsively. Not mutts that are sold as pure. And not pure blood that are abusively inbreed. My so called Dumb Hog island MUTT is one of the prettiest, docile, healthiest snakes I have in my collection. Thanks for the opinions though.

Yeah, you're right about inbreeding, and on many point besides too, but you got way more offended then I meant, and when I went back and read my post I realize you were right to be, but anyway, I was just angry cuz I had just finished reading a post on another forum about a cross sold as a pure hogg, and I was just thinking how i hate irresponsible breeders... thats all really

Biodemon Apr 22, 2007 07:49 AM

I agree! People who sell a mix as pure piss every one off. They make people like me look bad. I worry about selling a mix to some one to find out later they sold it as pure. Not only is it bad for the pure breed but every one down the line after gets ripped. If people could only just be honest we could all be happier.

I applaud the efforts of those who breed pure locale boas, but it will never be something anyone will use for replacing wild populations, etc. Aside from disease factors/genetic defects that might be introduced to wild populations, even though you breed for wild-type you are "selectively breeding" apart from "natural selection." Even if not specifically inbred, they would be unsuitable for release. So, I feel that breeding even if "pretty mutts" to supply for the demand in captivity so as to take pressure off of wild populations also helps preserve the locale boas. Hog X Colombians are considered "Bci" and are really no more mixed than the average pet store "Colombian." But, if you were looking to make intergrades, Suriname X Hogs ("Orange Flames" are very pretty, and I'd assume Salmontine-sunsets would be, too.

Thanks! Were might I find pictures of Suriname X Hogs? Salmontine Hogs or what about Bolivian Hogs? Hogintines? Hogvians? Hog colors with bat patterns would be way cool. I do have a male Bolivian silverback Amarali that I need to find a female for. Perhaps I might find some odd cool other mix male for my Hog mix female. I realy wouldn't feel right mixing my Bolivian.
