silk worms vs. crickets

Uromastyxnoobie Apr 17, 2007 09:02 AM

Debating on getting a bearded dragon. Not thrilled about keeping crickets as a staple, would be ok if it was once a week or so. Do crickets have that much of an advantage over say silk worms or another type of insect?

If they're full adults. Meaning they are 500 grams. 3 - 4 full size should be fine. But it's more complicated than that.

Silkworms grow to about 3" and then spin cocoons so if you have only 1 dragon then you have to start feeding out the worms when they are fairly small (which means more per meal) so you can finish them before they spin cocoons.

I have over 100 cocoons right now because Mulberry was overly generous on their count the last time. lol. The good part is the moths are fine too.

I've had good service from costalsilk worms, never used mulberry, too pricy for hornworms for me
Hornworms are great too. They are feed the same stuff as silkworms and get about twice the size full grown. My boys love them.
