Working with other breeders.. etiquette?

waspinator421 Apr 17, 2007 02:47 PM

I have been presented with the opportunity to work with another breeder for future breeding projects. It's not with thayeri, but this question can apply to any species. I am wondering what the "etiquette" is when mixing breeding stock? Who keeps the others snake, how to spilt babies or $ for babies, etc. Any tips?

Obviously I'd have to be careful who I'm dealing with if I sent one of my snakes off.... want to make sure I'd get it back!

You don't say in what regard you are working with the other party in. If you are breeding your snakes with someone elses, typically the male would travel to the female. It gives more peace of mind not shipping a gravid female. If you are local to each other I don't think it makes too much difference.

I have only worked with friends before so we always split the babies 50/50. If there were odd numbers we would make up for it on another project or split the babies as close to 50/50 and settle with half the value of the odd snakes. I liked splitting the babies because it allows you hold something back if you desire.

Good luck

Thanks for your input. I agree, splitting the babies sounds much more fun! This project is a long way off, so hopefully I'll get to know him pretty well. I'm very cautious about lending things out, and I'm sure he'd feel the same way if he sends to me. Thanks!

I have done this a couple of times. When I have done it, the female goes to the other breeders male. This is so the male can still be used with other females. I have always kept the other breeders female until eggs are laid or babies are born (or they keep my female). Then the female goes back home and the babies are split. The split can be anyway you decide but 50/50 is normal with the person doing most of the work getting first pic and any extra would go to the person with second pic. If breeding with a “special” animal (highly desirable for whatever reason, i.e…a pied rosy boa, a stripped Leonis, etc.). The person with the more normal snake would keep less than half in the split or not get the first couple pics in the deal. I keep just a pair in an Albino Rosy X Anery Rosy breeding with the Anery owner getting the rest. The problems arise when only one baby is produced or a very small number. Like you mentioned, it is best when the people know and trust each other.

Thanks Rick. Your post is very helpful. The solutions you wrote about sound very fair, and I like the idea of the males staying at home to breed other females as well.... makes sense. I would definetely have to get to know the other breeder fairly well before I trusted sending off any of my girls.

Thanks very much!

IT can be a very positive experience if handled correctly. My first bit of advice is don't do it unless you can afford to lose everything...breeders, babies...even your reputation. If / when the relationship turns confrontational over a disagreement or whatever...your name will usually get dragged through the BOI.

My other piece of advice would be have a written agreement that states what each of you bring to the project and how you will split clutch production. It can't hurt to add verbage in there that covers how long after the eggs hatch that you should receive your fair share of the hatchlings.

You have to look at it as a contract unless of course you are close friends with the person in question. MY current situation of 7 years works because I trust my friend unconditionally and if all the snakes I send him or he sends me die....we both understand that each of us did our very best to care for and proliferate the snakes.

If you want to talk more in depth about this I'd be glad to give you my number via email. You can email me at B8tes_Motel@msn.com

Good luck,
Russ

Thanks Russ, your advice is helpful. A written agreement sounds key to solve any disputes that may arise. You're right, if I was the one sending the snake off, I would have to be prepared to lose it. Not a fun thing to think about.

Oh, by the way. Regarding your post below, I don't appreciate it when folks use the word "gay" in a derogatory sense. I just don't think that that use of the word is appropriate, and can offend some people.

Thanks for the helpful advice!

Lucky you, having a melanistic to work with. I hope you get some little melanistic ones out of that pairing! Is melanistic a simple recessive in Thayeri, or is it just another variable?

I have no clue how the gene works, I have asked and got different explanations on it. So keep your fingers crossed.

Michelle- just to keep things straight I'm getting all the melanistic ones, and you're getting all the rest. Wasn't that our agreement? lol.
