grrrrr............irritated

XBlackHeart Apr 17, 2007 02:52 PM

I am kinda frustrated.
Two of my females were only two years old this spring and although they met the weight requirement, I did not breed them. Neither have ever been housed with any other snake let alone a male. It looks like one is very much gravid and I am starting to think the other is. I don't know what would have caused them to produce eggs. I mean, they are housed next to other snakes, but never together.
It irritates me that I did not want to risk their health and at least one of them decided to make that decision herself. And all for nothing, since she has never been with a male.

I had seen a post before about a virgin snake having a fretile egg. Did the fertile egg look like a dud or did it look good when it hatched? I am just wondering if she does lay eggs if I should even bother incubating. It sounds silly to me, but since it has been documented to happen before, I was just wondering.
Thanks for any feedback

i wouldnt even bother to incubate unless she was with a male even for just a few minutes.
as far as not breeding them when they are at proper weight, if a snake is ready shes ready if shes not shes not.proper weight is more important than age in my opinion

As you know snakes can and will produce eggs, even when never being with a male, especially when there is other breeding activity going on around them. I would be very surprised though if any of them were viable. In my experience size is usually more important than age when determining whether to breed or not.

The king snake that had never mated and had a viable egg.....I think it was by PHWyvern or something.

If the eggs look good or possibly viable, assume that they are until proven otherwise.

Unfortunately for us, our mother kingsnake decided to go again this year with another clutch. This time however, things did not go well. She became egg bound. Most of the eggs removed looked extremely good..large eggs in fact. Sadly though there was an infection within the oviducts that caused the blockage preventing the eggs from passing on their own. By the time she could be seen by a vet and have the eggs manually removed, they had been sitting in the mucky infection too long and didn't stand a chance of surviving. I tried cleaning the eggs and hoped, but the stench after 2 days was proof enough. Two of them even looked to have had the start of blood vessels - but the odds were not stacked in their favor. The vet flushed the snake's oviducts and treated her with antibiotics, but she died 10 days later.

I've heard about a snake (a hot) that a scientist had and the female laid one egg and it hatched, after incubation obviously. If the eggs look viable, incubate. I would imagine that if they would look the same as if she had mated; good looking good and bad looking bad. What's the worst that's gonna happen if you incubate the eggs?

Parthenogenisis has been known to occur. Just be carefull. You don't want a komodo dragon coming out of that egg!

Most likely, they are duds. It makes no difference if you want to breed them or not. However, it will be less stressful on her to lay duds than fertilized eggs.

xblackheart Apr 18, 2007 02:53 PM

Really?
I had always read that the duds are the ones that cause the problems, like egg binding and what not.
I guess for a small snake, the duds might be easier to pass though.

That is NOT correct. Non-Fertilized eggs are prone to causing egg binding, prolapses, infections within the mother, and even death.

see, thats what I thought. I thought for sure duds were harder to move through because their odd shape and texture.
