How many silk worms?

lizardfan81 Apr 17, 2007 03:44 PM

How many silk worms would you say a bearded would eat in a day? a week? or a month?

Am i ordering 100 for the month? 200 for the month?

Unless you buy eggs plan on ordering more than once a month if that is your primary feeder. See my post below.

Don't buy more than 100 to start. It takes a little time to get good at raising then. In the beginning expect to have some significant die-offs.

How many silkworms a dragon will eat depends on the size of the silkworms, age of the dragon and how often you feed.

If you buy a 6 month old dragon or older, (but still under 12 months) they need insects once a day, with a good healthy salad daily as well. Dragons this old can easily eat 1-2" silkworms and as many as 6-12 per meal. Thus, for a week, a 6 month old dragon would eat about 42-72 worms. If you want to order once a month, you will need to buy one inch silkworms..as they will grow before they are eaten, if you buy 400 a month. Always good to buy a bit more than you think you need, just in case a few die off. If they get too big and cocoon, keep the cocoons, especially if you have more than a dozen. Silkworms are easily bred and raised but it does take time to get the eggs ready (eggs should be refrigerated for a few months before being taken out and hatched. However, they can stay in the fridge to up to a year so you can keep a good stock of eggs and take them out as you need them).

How about an adult over a year old?

BDlvr Apr 17, 2007 07:16 PM

Well, I tested it. A full size silkworm on average weighs 3 grams. It takes 7 adult crickets to reach 3 grams on average. So if you feed an adult dragon 4 adult silkworms it would be the same weight as 28 adult crickets.

Neither the crickets or silkworms did well with the volume test. lol. But, I'd bet the results would be about the same.

A 1" silkworm is very thin, say 2mm. They are way to small to ever feed out at that size for the price. I'd wait till they are at least 2" to feed to any size dragon. Silkworms are very soft and present no impaction risk.

So as I said before. For a full adult 3-4 full size would be about right every day. If you only feed live food every other day then a few more. Really something your going to have to figure out as you go along. But, keep in mind that one of my dragons will not eat them at all.

Also, it is best to feed your dragon a variety of live food as well as a variety of greens and vegs.

For adult bearded dragons 1-4 silkworms is all they need on a daily basis. Less for larger silkworms. Most of their daily intake should be greens, only about 10% should be insects. Females who are being bred, recently laid eggs can have extra insects, to about 20-25% insects per day.
