Any info on hybrids?

felanmoira Apr 17, 2007 04:00 PM

I just recently figured out I cannot breed/sell corns in WV (but I can own them - dumb laws), so I'm looking into hybrids - can anyone give me info on possible hybrids out there?

Actually some people consider creamsicles natural intergrades while others consider them hybrids. The classification of snakes is an ever-changing and controversial topic.

Are you sure the state will allow you to have hybrids? In Ohio, hybrids, intergrades, albinos, etc. are all covered (regulated).

There are plenty of "pure" snakes that make just as good pets as corns: emory rats, Nelson's milks, Mexican black kings, etc. The care of most colubrids is very similar.

I have an email into DNR about hybrids.

cornsnakes have been bred into most kingsnakes, milksnakes and even gophers. Some even bring higher $$ in sales then corns

you could check out the hybrid forum. It is real slow and not as active as the corn forum, though. So, responses may take a while

You need to get some clarification on your state's laws regarding hybrids. Many states will apply the same laws to the hybrids of the protected species. Meaning, if you can't sell corns in WV, you may not be able to sell anything produced from corns, even if it isn't pure. If you can't breed corns, I would guess you can't breed corns, to anything. Don't go off "word of mouth", find something in writing because the first time you try selling, it may be brought up into question. Assuming it is permitted, you want to keep meticulus records because if they visually look like corns, thats all they need to cite you. My advice is if the species is protected and you are prohibited from breeding and selling, finding a completely different species to work with. You are only asking for trouble if you try to "toe the line".

Good luck,
Bart

Yep - that is correct. Find out if the law says "cornsnakes" or "cornsnakes and their hybrids." I'm also not sure if your state works on a species or subspecies. Find out what they consider regulated.

I've got an email out to a DNR law enforcement officer.

The law I was referred to before states "Native reptiles" but does not specifically state corn snakes. We do have one very tiny popular in the eastern panhandle (5 reported sightings and that is all as of last printing of anything official) of corn snakes, so they are considered native.

I'm trying to get clarification on the hybrids and if they aren't considered "native" - then I would only be breeding the hybrids, not corns to hybrids.

I'm a pretty meticulous recordkeeper in some things, and breeding animals would be one of those things

At least I'm not already breeding and then find this out.
