How common are "surprise" genes?

ericthemantis May 21, 2003 02:24 PM

What I mean is if I'm breeding some corn snakes that I purchased from various reptile shows, what are the chances or likelihood that I will get some surprise gene? For instance, my male normal corn is supposedly het for amel, and possible het for anery. My female is supposedly 100% normal okeetee. Has anyone ever had a similar situation where they got something totally different than what they were expecting? Thanks...

In my own experience, it has been common to get 'suprises' hatching. Of six clutches last year, three hatched surprises.

One clutch hatched ghosts proving an anery motley female het hypo. Another hatched amels proving a normal stripe male het amel. And a normal het amel female proved het hypo and anery when she threw amels, anerys, hypos, and ghosts. Above pic is some animals from that clutch.

For myself, half of the fun of breeding corns is the anticipation of 'surprise' hatchlings.

Good Luck and Happy Herping.

My first pair of snakes-2 normal corns produced snows.
Had no idea.

Last year a bought 1.5 Okeetees (turned out to be 3.3), and due to a lack of cage space I had all the "females" housed together (I learned to double check any snakes I buy). Anyway the point is that all of the females are het for amel, that was a nice little suprise.
